Aboriginal Peak Organisations of the Northern Territory Aboriginal Corporation (APONT) is a not-for-profit Aboriginal organisation based in Darwin, Northern Territory. Our members are the peak Aboriginal bodies and include the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency (NAAJA), Central Land Council (CLC), Northern Land Council, Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC), Tiwi Land Council (TLC) Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance of the NT (AMSANT), Aboriginal Housing NT (AHNT) and NT Indigenous Business Network (NTiBN). APONT was created to provide a more effective response to key issues of joint interest and concern affecting Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory, including providing policy solutions to government.
APONT is committed to increasing Aboriginal involvement in policy development and implementation, and to expanding opportunities for Aboriginal community control. APONT also seeks to deliver capacity building sector strengthening investment to Aboriginal community controlled organisations as well as strengthen networks between peak Aboriginal organisations and smaller regional Aboriginal organisations across the Northern Territory. A key responsibility of APONT is to ensure the Commonwealth and Northern Territory governments are meeting their commitments to Closing the Gap targets and priority reforms.
About the role
Aboriginal Peak Organisations NT (APONT) is seeking Senior Policy/Project Officers to support advocacy and policy development that improves outcomes for Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory.
Working collaboratively with member organisations, communities, and government stakeholders, the Senior Policy/Project officer will contribute to research, analysis, and development of policy positions across key areas affecting Aboriginal Territorians.
This role is ideal for someone passionate about Aboriginal self-determination, evidence-based policy and social justice.
Key responsibilities
* Undertake policy research, analysis, and briefings on issues affecting Aboriginal communities in the NT.
* Travel to remote Aboriginal communities to undertake consultations.
* Assist with the development of policy submissions, reports, and advocacy materials.
* Support engagement with member organisations, Aboriginal leaders and community representatives.
* Monitor legislation, government policy developments and reforms relevant to Aboriginal Territorians.
* Contribute to meetings, consultations and working groups with government and sector partners.
* Prepare briefings, presentations, and communication materials for senior leadership.
About you
We are looking for someone who:
* Has experience in policy development, research, or advocacy.
* Demonstrates strong written communication and analytical skills.
* Has an understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory.
* Can work collaboratively with Aboriginal organisations and stakeholders.
* Is highly organised and able to manage multiple priorities.
