The Opportunity
The Apprentice Boilermaker will work under the supervision of qualified tradespeople to learn and develop skills in metal fabrication, welding, and general workshop operations. This role involves both on-the-job training and structured learning through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) to complete a Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade (Boilermaker/Welder).
You will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks in the fabrication, welding, and assembly of structural steel and metal components.
Key Responsibilities
* Structural Welding: Perform welding in all positions, primarily using MIG welding, with some TIG and Arc welding in the workshop.
* Adherence to Welding Procedures: Ensure all welds comply with specified welding procedures and undergo required inspections.
* Material Knowledge: Have a solid understanding of different materials including stainless steel (S/S), alloyed steels, aluminium, and other metals commonly used in fabrication.
* Structural Steel Fabrication: Perform medium to heavy-duty fabrication of structural steel, ensuring components are fabricated to required specifications.
* Multi-technique Welding: Carry out welding using a range of techniques, including MIG, TIG, and Arc welding, as required for each task.
* Mechanical Cutting & Grinding: Perform routine mechanical cutting, grinding, and preparation of metal parts for fabrication or assembly.
* General Labouring: Assist with other manual tasks related to fabrication and assembly as needed.
* Blueprint Interpretation: Read and interpret detailed technical drawings and specifications to determine job requirements, material, and equipment needs.
* Metal Forming: Cut, roll, shape, bend, spin, heat, or hammer metal products to fabricate parts or sub-assemblies.
* Heat Treatment: Heat treat metal parts and components to meet specific requirements for strength, hardness, and durability.
* Tool Setup & Operation: Set up and operate hand tools, machine tools, and welding equipment effectively.
* Assembly & Construction: Assemble parts and structures by accurately lining up and joining components using welding, bolting, or riveting techniques.
* Workshop Maintenance: Maintain a clean and organized workshop, ensuring equipment and materials are stored safely and appropriately.
