We are looking to appoint an experienced and efficient nurse to work as a Band 6 research nurse within the RDN adult research delivery team to manage a portfolio of clinical research studies, ensuring that studies are run to the highest standards incorporating GCP Guidelines. This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to develop and broaden their skills.

We are also opening up this opportunity to consider Band 5 applications for a progression post, with support and training to meet Band 6 competencies / person specification and workload. This would suit a Band 5 nurse who has an interest in Research.

We will provide in-house training. As you build your knowledge and confidence you will be expected to work independently and manage your own caseload in conjunction with the team of research staff.

You will be appointed into a Band 5 trainee role until you have completed the relevant training and passed the competencies required for the role. This will include a minimum of 9 months in a relevant clinical research role. At this point you will progress to Band 6

Main duties of the job

The Band 5 Research Nurse will be a member of the NIHR RDN adult Research Delivery team assisting in the set up and delivery of NIHR Portfolio research across the CUH Campus. The post-holder would be required to help identify patients eligible for clinical trials, provide information and support for patients entering clinical trials, recruit patients to clinical trials using trial eligibility criteria, co‑ordinate trial patient treatment, assessment, follow‑up and data collection according to specific clinical trial protocols. They would need to demonstrate extended skills such as phlebotomy, ECG and laboratory skills to perform research duties in line with study protocols.

The band 6 nurse is responsible for the provision of high quality, patient focused clinical research for the cross divisional team.

Responsible for identifying eligible clinical research participants, provision of information and support to patients/participants, study recruitment and consent, co‑ordination of study treatment/ interventions, assessing, developing and implementing specialist nursing care and data collection according to study protocols in accordance with ICH Good Clinical Practice, EU Clinical Trials legislation and the NHS research governance framework.

Person Specification

Qualifications Band 6

- Registered nurse. Evidence of continuous professional development
- Post registration qualification in speciality or willingness to complete
- Degree

Experience Band 6

- Relevant clinical experience at Band 5 or above including experience in an acute setting
- Experience of formal/informal teaching Supervision of junior staff
- Experience of working within multi-disciplinary teams
- Experience of working in a clinical research environment e.g. Clinical Trials, participant recruitment and interviewing
- Experience of co‑ordinating REC and HRA submissions

Knowledge Band 6

- Knowledge of clinical research infrastructure in the UK and of research related legislation & regulation
- Understand the structure, role & functions of RECs and R&D; departments
- Understanding of the requirements of ICH Good Clinical Practice; possess current GCP Certificate
- Knowledge of the role of the clinical research nurse; understanding the issues/process of gaining informed consent
- Basic knowledge of research methods
- Working knowledge of clinical trials
- Capable of writing reports and of presenting research related information to a wide audience
- Competent in research/database PC packages

Skills Band 6

- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to undertake teaching of staff and patients
- Ability to work unsupervised and manage own workload; effective time management.
- Ability to work independently but also able to operate effectively within multi-disciplinary teams across professional disciplines
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills: ability to develop good working relationships with diverse study participants, healthcare professionals and external agencies
