Position Overview
The Service Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of RTM Engineering's Bowen workshop and site operations. This role ensures all engineering, fabrication, and mechanical service work is delivered safely, efficiently, and to a high technical standard.
Reporting to the Branch Manager, the Services Manager plays a pivotal role in leading the trades team, coordinating workflow, maintaining equipment readiness, and ensuring customer commitments are met.
The position requires a hands-on leader with strong technical and operational capability, and a genuine commitment to safety and quality.
Key ResponsibilitiesSafety, Quality & Compliance
· Uphold RTM Engineering's high standards for safety, ethics, and compliance in all workshop activities.
· Conduct toolbox talks, safety briefings, and routine inspections.
· Ensure all fabrication, welding, and repair work meets engineering drawings, specifications, and client requirements.
· Oversee testing, inspection, and quality assurance processes before job completion.
· Maintain compliance with workplace health and safety standards including knowledge of ISO 9001, 45001 and 14001 standards.
Workshop Operations & Planning
· Plan and coordinate daily and weekly workshop workloads across fabrication, fitting, machining, and repair jobs.
· Allocate work to trades, apprentices, and contractors based on skills and availability.
· Manage workshop resources to deliver projects on time and within cost targets.
· Liaise with the Branch Manager and field service team to align workshop and site priorities.
· Ensure job documentation, work orders, and job cards are completed accurately and submitted promptly.
Leadership & Team Development
· Lead, mentor, and motivate a team of supervisors, tradespeople, apprentices, and trades assistants.
· Foster a culture of teamwork, safety awareness, and continuous improvement.
· Identify training needs and support skill development within the workshop team.
· Manage rosters, leave planning, and workforce allocation to meet operational demands.
Maintenance & Asset Management
· Ensure all workshop plant, tools, and lifting equipment are maintained in safe, serviceable condition.
· Manage calibration, tagging, and maintenance inspection schedules.
· Support the Branch Manager in equipment procurement and capital maintenance planning.
Project Management, Job Coordination & Client Focus
· Communicate effectively with the Branch Manager and administration team on job progress, costs, timelines and invoicing requirements.
· Support customer service by ensuring jobs are delivered on time, within scope, and to specification.
· Assist with technical input for job quotations and estimates.
· Contribute to weekly branch meetings and operational planning sessions.
Key Performance Areas and KPIs
· Safety performance (Lost Time Injury free operations, incident reporting compliance).
· Workshop utilisation and job turnaround efficiency.
· Quality performance (rework rates, inspection pass rates).
· On-spec, on-time, on-budget job delivery.
· Job quoting and invoicing turn-around.
· Staff engagement, retention, and development.
Qualifications & Experience
· Trade qualification in Fabrication, Fitting, or Mechanical Engineering (Certificate III or higher).
· Minimum 5 years' post-trade experience in a supervisory or workshop management role within the engineering, fabrication, or industrial services sector.
· Sound understanding of welding, fabrication, and mechanical repair standards.
· Demonstrated ability to plan workloads, manage teams, and coordinate resources.
· Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
· Computer literacy in job management systems (e.g., WorkGuru, Xero, SimPRO, or similar), Microsoft Excel, and scheduling tools.
· Current driver's licence; forklift or HR licence desirable.

Remuneration
A competitive salary package will be offered based on experience, including base salary, superannuation, and performance incentives. A tool-of-trade vehicle or allowance may be included depending on operational needs.
