The Organisation

The VIFM is a statutory agency within the Justice Portfolio of the Victorian Government. Our doctors and scientists investigate deaths reported to the Coroner, examine alleged offenders and medically assess, treat and support victims of crime. Our services are provided alongside teaching and research, working together to safeguard our evidence in court.

The VIFM also houses and operates the Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria (DTBV). supports patients and their families by providing human tissues to medical specialists and Victorian hospitals for transplantation and medical research.

In September 2024 the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine Act 2024 was enacted. This new Act strengthens our governance arrangements, promotes improved engagement with our stakeholders, and embeds training and research as core VIFM functions.
