As our Assistant Director, you'll be the Centre Director's most trusted partner — stepping in as their right-hand support and confidently holding the fort when needed. This is a hands-on, meaningful leadership role that draws on your real experience in early childhood settings. You'll bring a depth of knowledge that can only come from time spent in the sector, and you'll use that experience to lift the entire team around you.
You'll have the flexibility to float between rooms, offering in-the-moment leadership, coaching, and mentorship to educators at all levels. Whether you're guiding a new educator through their first week or working alongside a seasoned team member to refine their programming, your presence will be felt and valued across the whole centre.
In addition to your time on the floor, you'll be allocated dedicated non-contact time each week to focus on leadership tasks — giving you the space to be intentional, strategic, and effective in your role.
What Your Day Might Look Like
Your role sits at the heart of the centre. You'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with the Centre Director on the day-to-day running of the service, while also being the go-to person for educators who need guidance, reassurance, or direction. You'll understand compliance inside and out, bring confidence to conversations about quality, and lead by example in everything you do.
Your key responsibilities include acting as the 2IC (Second-in-Charge) and stepping up to lead the centre in the Director's absence with confidence and capability. You'll collaborate closely with the Centre Director to ensure smooth, high-quality operations across all rooms, and take an active role in mentoring and coaching educators — supporting their professional growth and helping them reach their full potential.
Floating across rooms will be a key part of your role, providing consistent leadership, maintaining routines, and being a stable and trusted presence for both children and staff. You'll also be involved in practical centre management tasks during non-contact time, including rostering, compliance, documentation, and team development. Supporting performance conversations, contributing to a positive and inclusive workplace culture, and building strong, trusting relationships with families and the community are all part of what you'll do here.
About You
You're not just stepping into a leadership role — you've lived it. You bring genuine, hands-on experience as an Assistant Director or Educational Leader in a Long Day Care setting, and you understand what it takes to support both a team and a Director in a busy, dynamic centre environment.
You hold a Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education (or are working towards one), and you have proven experience in a leadership role within a Long Day Care or early childhood setting — not just in title, but in practice. Your strong working knowledge of the EYLF, NQS, and regulatory requirements means you're already across what quality looks like and how to achieve it. You're a natural mentor who finds genuine satisfaction in helping others grow, and your calm, approachable leadership style means people trust and turn to you. You're highly organised, proactive, and able to manage competing priorities without losing your focus on quality or your team. Above all, you're someone who can be relied upon — by educators, by families, and by the Centre Director — every single day.
