* Support NSW communities by driving natural hazard risk reduction and disaster adaptation planning.
* Two opportunities:
o One ongoing full-time opportunity (based in Sydney/Parramatta, other locations negotiable, with flexible/hybrid working environment)
o One temporary full-time opportunity, with a focus on flood hazards in the Northern Rivers (up to 31 December 2026, with the possibility of extension) (based in Lismore, other locations negotiable, with flexible/hybrid working environment)
* Salary relative to experience, and ranges from $113,574 - $125,720 + super

About the role

As a Project Officer, Natural Hazards, you will play a key role in supporting technical specialists to develop and deliver natural hazard risk reduction strategies and interventions for place-based disaster adaptation planning. Working within the Flood, Coastal and Hazard Strategy Branch and the Adaptation, Mitigation and Data Insights Division, you will collaborate across the broader RA network, as well as with state government agencies, local councils, and research partners.

Your work will involve contributing to methodologies for assessing natural hazard risks—including flood, coastal, bushfire, heat, cyclone, storm, tsunami, earthquake, and landslide—while providing project management and support services to ensure successful delivery of complex, interconnected projects. This is an opportunity to make a tangible impact on community resilience and disaster preparedness across NSW.

About You

You are a proactive and detail-oriented natural hazards scientist or equivalent with strong analytical skills and a passion for building safer, more resilient communities. You value collaborative environments, can translate technical findings into actionable insights, and are comfortable managing competing priorities under tight deadlines.

Key experience and knowledge:

* Understanding of natural hazard risk management, with experience in flood risk management required for the temporary role.
* Experience in analysing and interpreting hazard and risk data to inform decision-making.
* Proven ability to meaningfully contribute to projects delivering measurable change.
* Strong research and analytical skills.

Technical and soft skills:

* Data analysis and interpretation of natural hazard and risk information.
* Preparation of reports including technical documents, public-facing communications, and place-based strategies.
* Familiarity with disaster risk reduction principles, and management frameworks and approaches (for the temporary flood role, including the NSW Flood Risk Management Manual).
* Ability to work within a team environment and with external stakeholders.
* High level of personal motivation and strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities under pressure.
* GIS competency and experience highly desirable.

Essential Requirements:

* Tertiary qualifications in natural hazard sciences or engineering, geography or environmental science, or equivalent experience.
