Key Responsibilities

* Design and develop steel fabricated components and assemblies for commercial manufacturing.
* Utilise CAD software (2D and/or 3D) to generate fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, and manufacturing documentation.
* Work with the manufacturing team to transition designs into production, ensuring manufacturing efficiency, feasibility, and fit for purpose.
* Assess and define fabrication processes (cutting, welding, forming, assembly) to ensure cost-effective, high-quality output.
* Collaborate with stakeholders (product development, procurement, manufacturing, quality) to ensure designs meet functional, quality and regulatory requirements.
* Review existing fabrication processes, identify improvements, and implement engineering changes to reduce waste, increase throughput, improve safety and optimise manufacturing flows.
* Ensure drawings and documentation are maintained, version-controlled, and compliant with internal standards.
* Support commissioning and testing of prototypes or first-runs, troubleshoot fabrication/manufacturing issues and provide engineering solutions.

Essential Skills & Qualifications

* Proven experience in steel fabrication engineering within a manufacturing environment (preferably in sheet/plate steel, structural steel or heavy fabrication).
* High proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD, or equivalent) including generating fabrication and assembly drawings.
* Strong understanding of manufacturing processes (cutting, forming, welding, finishing, assembly) and how to engineer for efficient production.
* Hands-on mindset and ability to work in a fast-moving manufacturing setting, liaising between design and shop floor.
* Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to drive engineering decisions from concept through to manufacturing.
* Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across functions.

Desirable Skills & Attributes

* Experience in working with sheet metal, laser/plasma cutting, bending/forming, robotic welding or CNC fabrication.
* Experience with quality systems / manufacturing standards (e.g., ISO9001, AS/NZS standards) or relevant engineering certifications.
* Familiarity with manufacturing cost-engineering, throughput optimisation, lean manufacturing practices.
* Demonstrated ability to implement continuous improvement initiatives.
* Self-motivated, adaptable, and comfortable working in a contract environment with clearly defined deliverables.
