Are you a passionate communicator or presenter who loves sharing informative content and storytelling? The Royal Australian Mint is looking for Museum Hosts to join our busy team. The Royal Australian Mint visitor experience (of Museum, Mint Shop and Café) are open 7 days a week, 8.30am to 5pm weekdays and 10am to 4pm weekends and public holidays. The Museum at the Mint sees an annual visitation of around 350,000 people including visiting school groups of around 60,000.
Our Museum Hosts lead public tours and supervise the busy museum floor, greet our guests and help with wayfinding, and deliver our education programs and school holiday programs.
Are you flexible and prefer non-traditional schedules? We have multiple positions to recruit, both full-time equivalent and part-time shifts, and are keen to hear about your availability and interest.
While we are open 7 days and can offer shifts across this time, our busiest school visit days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during semester, and so if you’re a parent returning to the workforce and juggling school pickup times, have carer responsibilities or are a university student looking to balance classes, this might be the role for you.
About the Mint
The Royal Australian Mint is a small government agency working within the Commonwealth Government Portfolio of the Treasury. The Mint is a non-corporate Commonwealth Entity and is listed under the Public Governance Performance and Accountability Act 2013 (PGPA Act). * Coin making – polishing, laser frosting, 3D engraving, Physical Vapour Deposition hard coating, chrome plating, dies inspection and collars manufacture.
* Machinery – operate and maintain minting critical machines.
* Coin Sculpting – design coins, medals, medallions, and token, etc.
* Graphic Design – design coin packaging materials, exhibition graphics, etc.
* Engineering – technical support and manufacturing operations.
About the Branch
The Museum and Public Engagement Branch (MaPE) is responsible for a broad range of functions that impact Australian citizens, customers, collectors, and visitors to the Mint. The Branch encompasses coin and graphic design, product development, and sales, while also creating experiences for people through the museum, digital platforms and public programs. They help raise awareness of the Mint and the National Coin Collection among everyday Australians, playing a vital role in educating the community about the significance of currency in society, Australian culture, and key moments in our shared history. The work of the Branch also inspires people to engage with the Mint’s collector coins and the stories those coins preserve.
MaPE delivers a significant commercial program for the organisation, including the design and development of numismatic products and driving innovation in product design. The Branch focuses on generating awareness and engagement through the museum and other experiences onsite and offsite. The goal is to convert this into lasting relationships between the public and the Mint.
About the Role
Museum Hosts are the public face of the Mint, responsible for engaging with visitors and sharing stories related to coin history and manufacture. They present public tours and education programs to a variety of audiences, and they also provide front desk and welcoming services to Museum visitors.
Museum Hosts incorporate their understanding of the historical coins in the National Coin Collection, the operations of the Mint factory and coin releases into tours. They contribute to the development of public programs and data entry work for our National Coin Collection.
A Museum Host is a passionate communicator and storyteller, able to deliver our set tour content but also drawing on their own learning and experience to answer the dozens of questions younger family members fire at us mid-tour while delivering an entertaining experience.
We can be a busy space, with our annual visitation of around 350,000 people including visiting school groups of around 60,000, and so there is an element of shepherding of our groups and assisting in keeping our busy Museum floor on its schedule.
The Royal Australian Mint is open 7 days, and our museum operating hours are 8:30am to 5:00pm weekdays and 10:00am to 4:00pm weekends and public holidays. Museum Hosts are required to work set shifts over a 7-day roster, including on weekends, public holidays and during school holiday periods. Our Museum Hosts wear a uniform which we provide. Museum Hosts require a level of physical mobility to walk and stand for extended periods and perform manual handling tasks.
