The Senior Principal Structural Engineer is tasked with solving unique and complex problems that have a broad impact on the business. They must proactively identify and solve the most complex problems that impact the management and direction of the business. The Senior Principal Structural Engineer is considered a specialist in the field of Structural (Eng) and they offer a broad base of knowledge about the Engineering function. The Senior Principal Structural Engineer impacts the direction and resource allocation of programs and projects in their discipline and works within general functional policies and industry guidelines. The Senior Principal Engineer role requires conceptual and innovative thinking to develop creative solutions to Structural (Eng) challenges.


Responsibilities

* Perform conceptual, FEED, and detailed analyses and design as per design basis, project specifications, design codes, and standards
* Apply in-depth skills and broad knowledge of the business to address complex problems and nonstandard situations
* Prepare clear and accurate detailed design calculations and analyses including design reports and procedures
* Manage own time to meet objectives and forecast and plan resource requirements (as Lead Engineer)
* Communicate and explain difficult concepts and persuade others to adopt a point of view
* As Lead Engineer, direct medium or large Engineering team, lead discipline engineering design of the assigned work area, and complete it within planned schedule and budget
* Plan, organize, and direct all aspects of Discipline execution on the project including scope, deliverables, schedule, and manpower resources; agree allocations with the Discipline Manager
* Ensure interfaces and deliverables are identified; maintain progress and productivity; act as project representative for Discipline in meetings
* Coordinate with customer discipline lead and relevant agencies (certifying authorities, auditors, third parties)
* Train/mentor other employees in the department
* Assist and monitor MOPEX offices on projects
* Understand other engineering departments; initiate input from other disciplines
* Understand construction/fabrication yard and client requirements; maintain commercial insight
* Help maintain Unifi; prepare bid from sketching data using experience
* Supervise engineers and designers; define scopes of work for engineering/construction fabrication yard
* Provide engineering support as required
* Perform engineering checks of drafting and checks prepared by others; perform design verification through single discipline checks and assist with IDC
* Prepare MTOs of structures; prepare specifications and subcontract; review vendor data; prepare technical bid evaluations
* Assist in furthering the department
* Coordinate and check the work of senior and junior engineers; conduct peer reviews; provide technical assistance
* Prepare structural analyses and reports or perform specialist tasks (architectural designs, underground piping designs, complex structures, topsides, jackets, weight control reports, COG reports)
* Specialize in multiple fields (geotechnical, steel, concrete, dynamic calculations, FEM, fatigue calculations, earthquake, jackets, FPSOs, blast, hydrodynamics, architectural)
* Specialize in several design codes (EC, ACI/AISC/API, GOST, …)
* Check designs for operability, constructability, and maintainability
* Prepare project engineering guides


Lead Engineer Tasks

* Work as Lead Engineer on medium to large EPC projects
* Be responsible for all engineering and design work on the project
* Have full control and manage work hours, materials, progress
* Work in close liaison with the Design Coordinator
* Set up all engineering computer systems
* Assist Project Manager with deliverable control, schedule, progress reports, and man-hour/cost estimates
* Coordinate with project management; train personnel under supervision
* Responsible for discipline within the engineering group; manage (design) subcontracts
* Identify and manage changes in the scope of work; file engineering work; provide feedback to the department

Reports to: Lead Engineer, Project Engineering Manager, Project Manager, or Supervising Department Manager

Liaise with: All Engineering disciplines, Construction site/Fabrication Group, Safety Dept, Project Management Team, Document Control, Project Planner, Project Cost Controller, QC and Certification Group, Procurement Group, Subcontractors and Vendors, and Customers

Supervises: Senior Engineers, Engineers and Designers


Qualifications


Essential Qualifications and Education

* Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in engineering
* 20+ years of experience in oil and gas with a major contractor or consultants predominantly performing detail design
* Preferably Registered Professional Engineer or member of professional engineering society as applicable
* Seasoned knowledge of engineering standards and specifications
* Good knowledge of engineering software
* Able to work independently
* Good working knowledge of English, both oral and written
* HSE, TQM, and cost-conscious
* Good technical structural knowledge
* Good organizer, motivator, and supervisor
* Keen on improving the effectiveness of the work
* Show flexibility and ensure proper hand-over with regards to reassignment to other departments/construction sites/fabrication yards, replacement of colleagues during illness/holidays, assisting other colleagues with heavy workloads, managing/learning current methods and software, and reassignment to other McDermott offices
