Fire Communications Officer roles are offered on a Permanent Part-Time basis only, with the exception of Central Region – Rockhampton, where roles are offered as Permanent Full-Time.

About Us
The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) provides fire prevention, preparedness and response services, including scientific and specialist capabilities to Queensland communities. The department supports multi-hazard emergency response across fire, road crash rescue, bushfire, hazardous materials, technical and vertical rescue, severe weather, remote and swiftwater rescue, and other safety outcomes. The QFD encompasses Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR), Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ), and related functions to support communities and volunteers across the state. The QFD is focused on improving its relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities through initiatives like Path to Treaty and Closing the Gap.
Purpose of the role
Fire Communications Centres (FireComs) are responsible for emergency call taking, dispatching on-scene communications, coordinating and managing QFD resources. They monitor fire alarms, process general and non-urgent enquiries, update data and collate reports. Staff are trained in incident management systems, hazardous materials and technical rescue operations, and may be deployed nationally and internationally.
Key requirements
Mandatory Requirements
Currently holds a valid Blue Card (from Blue Card Services), with attached evidence to support
Australian Citizenship, New Zealand Citizenship or Australian Resident Status
Have or be able to obtain Certificate III in Public Safety (Emergency Communications Centre Operations)
Ability to successfully complete training programs of the Communications Training and Professional Development Program (CTPDP) at the prescribed level
Desirable Requirements
Typing speed of 45 wpm with 95% accuracy
Have or be able to obtain Apply First Aid and CPR Certificates
Your key accountabilities
Accept incoming fire and other relevant emergency incident calls and enquiries and collect relevant information
Assess risks and determine appropriate response and resources to dispatch
Despatch and coordinate resources and notify other organisations per the Communication Doctrine and Directives
Maintain and update incident information in the centre's CAD system; monitor progress and liaise with operational staff until incident completion
Complete required post-incident administration and provide information/reports to stations and other agencies
Monitor alarm signals and respond according to Doctrine and Directives
Provide mentoring and guidance on the job to new staff
Contribute to improvements of operational and administrative systems and procedures
Identify system faults and liaise with Specialist Operational Services Unit for reporting and updates to communications technology
Undertake general administrative and project duties as allocated (e.g., maintaining resource information, portfolio activities, system tests)
