People for Purpose
General Manager
Posted: 21 January
Offer description

The organisation

Culture College, established in 2014, is a not-for-profit Aboriginal Corporation with DGR status, operating as a high-growth, standalone, sustainable organisation.

Vision: Together we Learn – guided by Elders, grounded in Country, shaping balance and understanding for generations to come.

Purpose: To deliver transformative, two-way cultural education immersions led by Yolŋu pedagogy, fostering reconciliation through action for schools and organisations.

With over a decade of delivering cultural education at scale, Culture College supports schools, corporations, and government to implement their Reconciliation Action Plans, contributing to the nationwide reconciliation movement. The organisation operates out of NE Arnhem Land in partnership with Yolŋu communities and homelands.

The role

The General Manager (Interim) will provide culturally grounded, strategic, and operational leadership during a critical growth and transition period. The role reports to the Board and works closely with Yolŋu Elders and community partners. It is responsible for overseeing the delivery of extended cultural immersion programs in remote outdoor environments during the dry season (April–October), ensuring that safety, quality, cultural integrity, and respect remain central at all times.

The General Manager will lead day-to-day operations in remote settings, oversee risk and crisis management, manage budgets, and ensure strong governance and compliance within an Indigenous-led organisation. A significant part of the role involves working with schools, managing complex community dynamics, resolving staff matters with clarity and discernment, and keeping the Board well informed through transparent reporting.

This role requires a highly capable team leader with a deep understanding of working with First Nations communities and cultures and experience in outdoor education and program delivery. The General Manager will be community-centred, values-driven, and focused on quality outcomes, with the ability to bring diverse groups together to share, learn, and connect with Country.

Living primarily in Nhulunbuy and the surrounding region, this leader will mentor and support Yolŋu people to step into senior leadership over the next 3–5 years, building long-term capability and sustainable growth.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone comfortable leading operations, responding to emergencies, providing first aid where required, and walking with humility and calm authority in complex, culturally layered environments.
