They ensure tasks are finalized efficiently and are adept at advancing issues through effective stakeholder engagement, clear communication, and subject matter knowledge. PLOs employ a pragmatic approach to problem‑solving and deliver exceptional customer service. PLOs lead a team, focusing on staff development, goal setting, and performance management. They delegate work appropriately and measure performance effectively. A Practising Certificate or eligibility to obtain one is required. Candidates should have at least three years of post‑qualification experience. It is highly desirable for candidates to have specialised knowledge and experience in commercial law advisory work, preferably including experience in government procurement and contracting, grants, and property. High‑quality management and leadership skills are needed to effectively manage and develop senior legal officers and legal officers. Strong technical legal advice writing, second counselling, and research skills are essential. Candidates should possess sophisticated relationship management, communication, and negotiation skills to develop productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and provide excellent client service. The ability to work under pressure and be agile, flexible, and responsive in managing competing priorities and tight timeframes is also important.

Salary Information: The classification for the Principal Legal Officer role ranges from $157,000 to $177,000, plus superannuation, with part‑time pro‑rata options available.

Eligibility and Clearances: The position is ongoing (permanent) and full‑time, with flexible working arrangements negotiable according to the organisation’s Enterprise Agreement and operational requirements. Applicants must be Australian citizens and able to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (AGSVA) security clearance. Additional clearances, such as an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) or an Onboarding Check, may be required. The organisation is committed to workforce diversity and encourages applications from individuals who are Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, come from diverse cultural or linguistic backgrounds, or have a disability. The RecruitAbility scheme applies, inviting candidates with a disability who meet the minimum job requirements to participate in further assessment activities.

Application Process: Applications must be submitted through the organisation’s recruitment system before the specified closing date. The application process includes preparing a one‑page applicant response document outlining the candidate’s relevant skills, knowledge, experience, interest in the role, and specific achievements demonstrating their ability to perform the role. The document should be formatted in a minimum 11pt font in MSWord or PDF format and include the applicant’s full name and the Requisition Number in the footer. The organisation offers an attractive remuneration package, including salary, superannuation benefits, and flexible working conditions. Relocation assistance may be provided to eligible employees required to relocate, with the level of assistance varying based on the reason for relocating and personal circumstances.
