This prestigious two-year international Fellowship offers Radiation Oncologists the opportunity to train and contribute to collaborative, high-impact research at two world-leading cancer centres– the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, Australia and The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester, UK.

Peter Mac is Australia's first and largest quaternary cancer hospital, integrating cancer research, education, and treatment. Supported by state-of-the-art clinical and laboratory facilities, we are one of the world's leading institutions in cancer prevention, care, and discovery.
The Department of Radiation Oncology is a core clinical service, employing over 600 staff across five campuses—Parkville, Bendigo, Box Hill, Moorabbin, and Sunshine. We operate 16 linear accelerators, Gamma Knife, four superficial x-ray radiation machines, and HDR brachytherapy. In 2024, we delivered nearly 100,000 radiation treatments and supported over 7,500 new patients. Key areas of innovation include SGRT, stereotactic techniques, CT-free planning, and personalized radiation dosing. Radiation Oncologists at Peter Mac are embedded in a vibrant academic environment with opportunities to lead clinical and translational research.
The Christie NHS Foundation Trust
The Christie is one of Europe's leading cancer centres, treating over 64,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.
We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, and partner with The University of Manchester and Cancer Research UK to form the Manchester Cancer Research Centre. We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year.
Our radiotherapy department has a long tradition of research, innovation and world firsts which means our patients have access to the latest equipment and treatments as well as access to the latest clinical trials. The Christie is one of only two centres worldwide that offer MR-Linac and proton beam therapy. The Proton Beam Therapy Centre, opened in 2018, offers three treatment gantries as well as a dedicated Research Room to investigate the cutting-edge treatment. The Christie currently houses ten linear accelerators in the Withington site, with two further accelerators at The Christie's Salford site and another two at the Oldham site. The Christie also offers specialist linear accelerators for Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR), to treat lung, spine, liver, adrenal, lymph nodes and bone disease tumours. Radiotherapy research is undertaken via the Manchester NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and the Cancer Research UK RadNet Centre of Excellence.
Fellowship Structure and Research Opportunity
This is a two-year, full-time Fellowship (40 hours/week) with 80% research and 20% clinical focus.
The successful applicant will undertake supervised research across both Peter Mac (year 1) and The Christie (year 2) contributing to high-impact, collaborative projects with the potential for global influence. Relocation support can be negotiated.
Research themes may include:
Radiation biology and radio-genomics
Immuno-radiotherapy approaches
Personalised medicine and multi-omics integration
Health services research, including digital technologies (e.g., artificial intelligence and machine learning)
The Fellow will be expected to contribute to academic outputs, including at departmental and tumour stream meetings, conference presentations, and peer-reviewed publications. There will be opportunities to present research at local, national, and international scientific meetings.

Position Summary
The successful applicant will divide their time between clinical practice in radiation oncology and defined research project(s), with 0.2 FTE allocated to clinical duties and 0.8 FTE allocated to research. In their clinical role, it is expected that successful candidate will be able to practice as radiation oncologist, with minimal supervision. It is expected that the fellow will contribute to the academic productivity of their tumour stream, including successful completion of their research project and active participation in other research, clinical and educational activities of the unit.
