Overview
The Design Manager plays a critical leadership role, overseeing design activities across commercial and industrial D&C; (Design & Construct) projects nationwide. This position is involved in master planning of sites, ensures design excellence, compliance, and constructability while aligning outcomes with client requirements and internal delivery capabilities. The role reports directly to the State Manager and involves strong cross-state collaboration with internal teams and consultants. Interstate travel is required on an ad hoc basis to attend PCG meetings and provide in office design leadership as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Design Management & Leadership
- Responsible for site Master planning to ensure construction efficiency
- Lead internal and external design consultants from concept through construction documentation.
- Provide strategic design input during early phases of bids and project initiation.
- Review and approve design deliverables for constructability, compliance, and quality.
- Champion innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective design solutions.
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as primary liaison for design matters between clients, consultants, construction teams, and subcontractors.
- Participate in PCG meetings across states to represent the design function and resolve key issues.
- Work closely with Project Managers, Construction Managers, and Development teams to align design outputs with program and budget.
- Regulatory & Quality Compliance
- Ensure all designs meet relevant codes, standards, and local authority requirements.
- Coordinate the management of DA's, building permits, and design-related approvals.
- Oversee the review and updating of design documentation in response to changes during project delivery.
- Interstate Coordination
- Establish and maintain consistent design processes across multiple states and project teams.
- Travel interstate as required for project meetings, consultant workshops, site visits, and PCGs.
- Support and mentor state-based design coordinators and architects/drafters to ensure national consistency.
- Risk Management & Constructability
- Identify and mitigate design-related risks early in project planning.
- Conduct design risk workshops and ensure key risks are documented and managed.
- Ensure design outcomes support efficient construction methodologies and program delivery.

Skills & Qualifications
Essential:
- Tertiary qualifications in Architecture, Engineering, or Construction Management.
- 10+ years of experience in design management, ideally within commercial/industrial D&C; environments.
- Strong leadership, communication, and negotiation skills.
- Solid understanding of NCC, BCA, and other relevant construction standards.
- Ability to manage and drive multiple projects and design teams across geographic locations.
Desirable:
- Familiarity with industrial asset classes: warehousing, logistics, cold storage, or manufacturing.
- Experience with BIM coordination and digital design tools (e.g., Revit, Autocad) ideal.
- Project delivery experience through both planning and construction phases.
