The opportunity

CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years of relevant postdoctoral research experience. These fellowships aim to develop the next generation of future leaders of the innovation system.


CSIRO is seeking an Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Energy Flexibility Team and contribute to research in Data Centre Energy Management. In this role, you will investigate how large, flexible data centre loads influence the safe, secure and reliable operation of the electricity grid. You will develop advanced modelling capability for data centre energy demand and support grid power flow analysis to enable robust assessment of data centre impacts on grid operations. The position offers the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary research environment, engage with industry stakeholders, and contribute to research with real-world impact.

Your high-level duties will include:

* Conducting innovative, high-impact research aligned with CSIRO's strategic priorities.
* Developing software and modelling tools to support research objectives
* Analysing and interpreting complex energy system time-series data.
* Engaging with industry and electricity network stakeholders to inform research direction.
* Publishing research outcomes and presenting findings at national and international forums.
* Contributing to collaborative research teams across CSIRO.

Role particulars

Location: Newcastle, Hobart, Melbourne (Clayton), other locations may be considered.
Salary: AU$103,390 – AU$113,251 per annum (pro‐rata for part‐time), plus 15.4% superannuation.

As the successful candidate, you will bring:

Essential

* A PhD (or submission completed prior to commencement) in a relevant discipline such as Electrical, Mechanical, Environmental or Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field.
* Demonstrated experience developing software to support research outcomes.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* A track record of scientific publications or equivalent research outputs.
The ability to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.

Desirable

* Experience with energy system modelling, planning or operations.
* An understanding of the Australian Energy Market.
* An understanding of data centre and server operations.
* Experience with collaborative software practices such as version control and code review.
* Background in mathematical optimisation.

Eligibility

Applications for this position are open to Australian/New Zealand Citizens, Australian Permanent Residents and Australian Temporary Residents currently residing in Australia who hold, or are able to obtain, a valid working visa for the duration of the specified term (visa sponsorship not required).

Appointment to this role is subject to provision of a national police check and may be subject to other security/medical/character requirements.
