Job Description: Position Title: Head of Department - Emergency Medicine Classification: Senior Staff Specialist Agreement: The NSW (Non-Declared), Affiliated Health Organisations’ Staff Specialist Agreement 2021 Status: 3 year fixed term Head of Department appointment (with the option to extend for a further 3 years) plus a Permanent Staff Specialist position of up to 1.0 FTE. About the Appointment Applications are invited from suitably qualified Staff Specialists for the role of Head of Department, Emergency Medicine. The Head of Department appointment will be offered for a three year term, with the option to extend for a further three years, alongside a Permanent Staff Specialist appointment of up to 1.0 FTE. About the Role We are seeking a dynamic, forward thinking clinical leader to guide our Emergency Department into the future, aligned with the St Vincent’s strategic vision. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced leader with a proven ability to drive large-scale change and deliver meaningful improvements in both staff experience and patient outcomes. As Head of Department, Emergency Medicine, you will provide medical leadership and managerial oversight, set strategic direction, and promote excellence in clinical practice within the Emergency Department. You will work collaboratively with nursing, allied health, and administrative leaders to lead system improvements, strengthen culture and communication, and ensure effective resource management. Position Summary Provides strategic and operational leadership for the Emergency Department and is responsible for ensuring the provision of high quality and efficient clinical services. Implements the strategic direction of the Department consistent with that of the Clinical Stream. Promotes clinical standards and clinical governance accountabilities for medical staff within the Department, as an integrated part of the multidisciplinary team, actively leading the implementing systems for outcome improvement and benchmarking. Creates and leads a culture that attracts, trains, retains and empowers high calibre medical and other clinical staff within the department/ service. Organises and coordinates senior and junior medical staff within the Department for the provision of high quality and efficient clinical service delivery, training, research, and Department accreditation. Effectively acts to manage risks, including psychosocial hazards, in line with the organisation’s governance frameworks, industry standards, and legislation; actively creating and building a work environment and workplace culture that values respectful interactions, open communication, and collaborative problem solving. Actively implement equity, diversity and inclusion strategies to support staff in the department and deliver culturally safe clinical services. Develops strategies to effectively manage patient flow and access, prevention of hospital acquired complications, implementation of evidence based practices, and sustainable management of services. Functions as a senior leader within the broader Operational Directorate, Medical Stream and Emergency Department, providing high quality leadership, management, and ongoing service development to meet community needs. Selection Criteria: Appointment within St Vincent’s Health Network Sydney as a Senior Medical Practitioner. Possess Fellowship of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (FACEM) Training or qualification in clinical leadership and or management or governance. Knowledge and commitment to the implementation of best practice and clinical service innovation. Commitment to clinical service planning and in the provision of a patient-focused, comprehensive, high quality and cost-effective clinical service delivery. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead. Commitment to implement and improve strategies in relation to patient safety, patient flow and access, length of stay, continuity of care, clinical variation and waiting times for treatment (where appropriate). Demonstrated personal qualities of clinical leadership including communication skills, problem solving, time management, motivation, initiative, negotiation, collaboration and team building. Demonstrated ability in implementing equity, diversity and inclusion principles as they apply to patient care and staff.
