About the opportunity

The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for a motivated and experienced Specialist - Biosafety & Gene Technology to join the Safety team in developing and implementing biosafety and gene technology systems and resources .

The Specialist – Biosafety & Gene Technology role sits within the University's biosafety and Health, Safety and Wellbeing function, supporting institutional biosafety management systems, OGTR-related compliance, and the Institutional Biosafety Committee across research and teaching environments. The role works as part of a specialist HSW team, collaborating closely with IBC members, HSW partners, ICT, and regulatory stakeholders to modernise biosafety training, documentation, and digital tools.

Operating under broad direction, the Specialist – Biosafety & Gene Technology exercises independent judgment in developing and implementing biosafety systems and resources. It contributes to strategic planning and compliance oversight, with delegated authority to make operational decisions regarding biosafety communications, training frameworks, and enhancements to digital infrastructure.

By leading system upgrades, digital transformation, and stakeholder engagement, the role has significant impact on biosafety and gene technology governance, audit readiness, and the usability and accessibility of biosafety resources across the University. This role also supports flexible working arrangements.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

* modernise and streamline biosafety training programs and documentation practices
* design and maintain ICT platforms and online learning modules to support biosafety capability
* evaluate and implement systems for training delivery and compliance reporting
* coordinate and manage administrative tasks for the Institutional Biosafety Committee
* facilitate compliance activities, including facility inspections, to meet internal procedures and external regulatory requirements
* embed University procedures and external regulatory requirements into biosafety operational planning.

About you

* postgraduate qualifications (ideally in Science) or an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience
* proven ability to manage complex queries and provide strategic, timely and courteous biosafety/WHS advice using sound judgment and discretion
* demonstrated experience developing, implementing and monitoring laboratory compliance with WHS policy, procedures and practices, with strong working knowledge of WHS, OGTR and relevant Australian Standards
* substantial experience leading and managing high-volume, complex regulatory compliance regimes, including designing and improving efficient strategies, processes and systems
* significant experience with relevant laboratory regulation and legislation, including OGTR, Australian Standards 2243.3, IBC and WHS requirements
* demonstrated experience implementing safety management systems and driving continual improvement
* advanced digital literacy and a proven ability and willingness to quickly learn and optimise new systems and programs.
