Position Objective:
The Accounts Assistant supports the day-to-day financial operations of Jali Local Aboriginal Land Council (Jali LALC). Working closely with the Finance Manager, this role contributes to the accurate processing of financial transactions, payroll, reconciliations, and reporting, helping to ensure the organisation meets its financial, funding and compliance obligations.
The role supports Jali LALC's broader purpose by ensuring strong financial stewardship, accountability and transparency across land care, aged care and community programs. The Accounts Assistant works collaboratively within a small team environment and contributes to continuous improvement of financial systems and processes.
Key Responsibilities:
This role includes, but is not limited to:
• Processing accounts payable and accounts receivable, including maintaining debtor and creditor records in Xero.
• Uploading, coding and exporting invoices using Lightyear and Xero.
• Preparing weekly creditor payments and maintaining supplier records.
• Preparing payment files and bank uploads for approval.
• Processing payroll, including leave, allowances and other payroll-related transactions.
• Reconciling bank accounts and resolving discrepancies in Xero.
• Processing weekly staff expense claims and following up outstanding receipts.
• Assisting with grant acquittals and funding-related financial reporting.
• Supporting budget monitoring and assisting with internal financial reports.
• Assisting with ad hoc financial reporting and finance-related tasks as required.
• Maintaining accurate, well-organised financial records in line with organisational policies and audit requirements.
• Working collaboratively with the Finance Manager and broader team to improve systems, processes and financial practices.
• Ensuring all work is undertaken in accordance with Workplace Health & Safety requirements, organisational policies and confidentiality obligations.
• Other tasks as they arise and as directed.
Essential Requirements:
• Experience in a similar accounts or finance support role.
• Demonstrated experience in accounts payable and accounts receivable functions.
• Payroll processing experience.
• Demonstrated experience using Xero accounting software, or willingness to complete their free training prior to commencement.
• Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate, timely work.
• Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
• Well-developed organisational skills and a methodical, process-driven approach.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a small team environment.
• Willingness to comply with Jali LALC policies, procedures and Employee Code of Conduct.
• National Police Check or willingness to obtain if successful
Desirable Skills and Experience:
• Experience working in a not-for-profit, Aboriginal organisation or community services environment.
• Experience supporting grant-funded programs and acquittals.
• Interest in developing further finance and accounting skills, with mentoring and support provided.
