Primary objective
To provide comprehensive, accurate and timely administrative support to judicial officers of the Supreme Court; assist the Sheriff
to perform functions under the Sheriff Act 1962; and coach and mentor a team of Sheriff's Officers.
Context statement
The position holder provides advice and support to a broad range of clients in the criminal jurisdiction of the Court, including
jurors and people who are generally unfamiliar with the legal system. The position holder must be able to work with judicial
officers, and their staff, who have varying practices and expectations. The position holder is also required to undertake the duties
of other positions in the Sheriff's Office, Civil Registry and Chambers, during periods of absence or high work volume.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Assist the Sheriff by undertaking the day-to-day activities of the Sheriff's Office, including Court support and assisting in
Court as Sheriff's Officer as required; empanelling juries and acting as jury escort; and accurately processing documents and
Court outcomes in a timely manner in accordance with relevant, legislation, rules and Practice Directions.
1. Draft written procedures and provide coaching and mentoring support to Sheriff's Officers in relation to their key duties
and responsibilities.
1. Provide assistance and practical advice regarding court practice and procedure to the public, legal practitioners, staff and
clients of the Court.
1. Assist in the maintenance and security of files, records, registers and exhibits.
2. Other duties as directed by the Sheriff, including delegated statutory functions under the Sheriff Act 1962.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Strong client focus, with well-developed interpersonal and oral and written communication skills appropriate for working in a
professional legal environment dealing with a broad range of stakeholders, including people from diverse cultures and
professional backgrounds.
1. Demonstrated ability to coach and mentor staff with varying levels of experience and expertise.
2. Proven ability to work effectively within a team by being flexible and exercising a high level of initiative and motivation to
lead peers.
4. Demonstrated organisational skills with a proven ability to determine workload priorities, meet stringent deadlines, display
sound professional ethics, such as confidentiality and discretion, and a capacity to work under pressure with minimum
supervision in a highly sensitive environment.
1. Demonstrated proficiency in operating audio-visual equipment and using software applications applicable to the Court, such
as the Court's case management systems (Odyssey and IJIS).
1. A thorough operational knowledge of court practices, procedures, legislation and rules relevant to Courts in the Northern
Territory or the ability to quickly acquire that knowledge.
Desirable
1. Relevant tertiary qualifications or progression towards relevant tertiary qualifications.
