A leading defence engineering organisation supporting major Royal Australian Navy platforms is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join its Sydney‑based team. The organisation operates within a long‑term design support and sustainment program, delivering complex electrical and control systems solutions across in‑service naval vessels.
Your new role
his role focuses on the design, integration and assurance of shipboard electrical and control systems, working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and Defence stakeholders.
Key responsibilities include:
Delivering electrical and control systems engineering for naval vessels using robust systems engineering processes
Providing technical expertise across:
Electrical plant (generators, electric motors)
Power distribution systems, protection devices and switchboards
Electrical cabling and installation systems
Power conversion equipment and batteries
Ship lighting systems
Integrated Platform Management Systems (IPMS)
Alarm and warning systems
Undertaking technical investigations, root cause analysis and solution development
Developing engineering designs to integrate electrical and control systems into ship platforms
Producing high‑quality technical reports and engineering documentation in accordance with customer and regulatory standards
Coordinating engineering tasks from concept through to delivery, including scheduling and stakeholder engagement
Participating in design coordination and design review meetings with internal teams and Defence representatives
Supporting onboard installation activities, including scopes of work, work packages and test procedures
Liaising with clients, internal stakeholders and subcontractors
Providing mentoring and technical guidance to junior engineers
Operating in accordance with WHS, environmental and quality requirements within a regulated defence environment
What you'll need to succeed
A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
Minimum 8 years' experience as a professional electrical engineer
Experience working within a defence, maritime or heavy industrial environment
Proven experience with naval ship electrical and control systems, including medium‑voltage power design and analysis (up to 440VAC)
Strong understanding of power distribution, protection, IPMS and shipboard electrical systems
Experience working to classification society rules, IMO and relevant Australian Standards
Ability to read and interpret electrical P&IDs, single line diagrams and schematics
Experience using CAD tools such as AutoCAD or MicroStation
Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
Ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities and deliver in high‑pressure environments
Eligibility to obtain and maintain NV1 security clearance
