Overview
19.5 hours / Week - 12 Month Fixed Term Contract. Housing security underpins the health and social well-being of every member of the community. The scope of the position is to assist people to initiate, maintain and/or end tenancy agreements and to advocate on behalf of the rights of community members. The Tenancy Advocate will act in accordance with the social justice principles of reasonableness, amicability, equity and fairness.
Reporting to the Senior Tenancy Advocate and the Principal Solicitor, the Tenancy Advocate works with individual clients and groups to help them understand how the law applies to their specific circumstances, empowering them as much as possible to manage their own legal issues to get the best results.

South West Community Legal Centre Inc. is a not-for-profit community-based organisation providing quality legal advice, information targeted to low income, disadvantaged or marginalised people across the South West. The Centre's staff are committed to providing access to justice and dispute resolution services in their Bunbury office and through Outreach to other regional centres - Bridgetown, Busselton, Collie, Harvey, Manjimup and Margaret River. While independently operated, SWCLC is an accredited member of Community Legal Centres Australia and a member of Community Legal Western Australia.
About the Role
We are seeking a part-time Advocate in our Tenancy team. Advocates deliver high-quality, client-centred supervised legal advice to clients, and work with them to understand their legal issues and rights. Advocates work closely with the supervising lawyers and other team members delivering legal and support services, including cultural support, to provide clients with trauma-informed, effective, and streamlined services. You may be an ongoing point of contact and liaison for existing clients, providing information, further advice, and assisting with arrangements for further service delivery.
Specific Duties
* Ensure the delivery of high-quality Tenancy Advice & Education services against targets set by the Department of Local Government, Industry, Regulation and Safety, which include:
* Advice and education to tenants (that will include one-on-one, email and phone);
* Case work, including negotiation, conciliation and advocacy services.
* Court Advocacy support.
* Tenant Education and publications; and
* Education and support to community workers.
Comply with systems, policies and procedures for the Tenancy Advice & Education program, to enable the organisation to meet all program contractual obligations. This includes, but is not limited to:
* Data collection requirements.
* Consumer feedback mechanisms; and
* Continuous Quality Improvement mechanisms.
Provide direct case management support, required reporting and services in line with program guidelines.
* Develop and deliver community education programs on issues relating to tenants' rights and responsibilities.
* Develop and facilitate tenant education programs for tenants and community workers.
* Develop and update educational publications for tenants.
* Provide service information and referrals to community support services.
* Participate in collaborative integrated multi-disciplinary teams (that will include representation from other agencies).

About You
* Demonstrated interest and commitment to human rights and social justice issues.
* Demonstrated capacity to interpret and apply legislation.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to understand and convey complex details to people from diverse social, cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
* Genuine interest in the law and regulations pertaining to the Residential Tenancies Act (1987) WA
* Knowledge and understanding of Court procedures
* Demonstrated negotiation skills
* Demonstrated commitment to delivering client service of a high professional and ethical standard
* Working knowledge of day-to-day operations of a legal service
* Outstanding oral and written communication skills
* Demonstrated capacity to work in a small team and support a cohesive environment
* Capacity to use initiative, set priorities, organize and manage workloads
* High level expertise in using the full suite of Microsoft Office products
* Good self-care and stress management skills
* National Police Clearance
* Current driver's license
