About the role
This is a hands-on position where you’ll work across the municipality, carrying out inspections and enforcement activities on both commercial and residential buildings to ensure they are safe and compliant. The role is offered on a 12-month limited tenure, with the potential to become ongoing.
You’ll report to the Coordinator Statutory Building Services and work closely with the Municipal Building Surveyor and other technical staff. Your focus will be on building enforcement inspections, swimming pool and spa safety barrier audits, and mandatory building inspections when required.
About you
You bring strong knowledge of the Building Act, Regulations, National Construction Code, and Australian Standards, along with experience in enforcement processes. Your communication skills are exceptional, enabling you to prepare clear reports and directions.
You hold current registration as a Building Practitioner in the category of Building Inspector – Unlimited or Limited, with at least five years of experience. A tertiary qualification in Building Surveying or Building Inspection, combined with practical industry experience, is essential.
Experience in using technology for reporting and managing inspections is desirable, as is previous work in a Municipal Building Surveyor’s office or similar environment.
Key responsibilities
Your day will be varied and impactful. You’ll respond to complaints and queries about building control, liaising with property owners, builders, and complainants to resolve disputes. You’ll conduct enforcement inspections and safety barrier audits, ensuring compliance with the Building Act and Regulations.
Collaboration is key—you’ll work with other Council departments to share information and discuss inspection outcomes. At times, you’ll respond to emergency call-outs, including after-hours situations, to safeguard our community.

Employment Requirements
* Current registration as a Building Practitioner by the Victorian Building and Plumbing Commission in the category of Building Inspector (Unlimited).
* Tertiary qualification in Building Surveying together with significant practical experience in the industry and local government.
* Applicants must have the right to work in Australia.
* Preferred applicants will be required to undergo a National Police Record Check and hold a valid Working with Children Clearance.
