Project Overview
Towards Truth is a groundbreaking collaboration between the JEC and the Indigenous Law Centre (ILC) at UNSW that responds to the call of the Uluru Statement from the Heart for truth-telling. We are building a comprehensive database and website that provides an accurate, detailed record of the laws and policies that have impacted the lives of First Nations people from 1788 to the present day.
Responsibilities
The Research Assistant will support the day-to-day implementation of the project with legal and policy research and by drafting plain English summaries of law and policy for the database/website. Additionally, you will:
- Research and analyse specific areas of law and policy and their impact on First Nations people
- Develop and review research requests for pro bono lawyers and interns under the direction of the Research Manager
- Contributing to plain-English summaries of research areas to appear on the Towards Truth website.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person who has completed or is completing a law degree. You will also have:
- Demonstrated research and analytical skills
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team
- Understanding of the Uluru Statement of the Heart and a commitment to truth-telling
Special Measure
This position is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is intended as a special measure for the purposes of s 8(1) of the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth) and s 21 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
