Our team of psychologists provide assessment andintervention for young people throughout Western Australia. Youth JusticePsychological Services provides both individual and group interventions. Weutilise evidence-based frameworks to reduce offending and improve thetrajectory for young people in the Youth Justice system. Psychologists inYouth Justice develop skills working with complex young people with a varietyof challenges including mental health, neurodevelopmental, complex trauma and arange of offending patterns.
Our team works in both custody and in communitycentres. The role is diverse and incorporates clinical intervention, forensicassessment and consultation. You will be supported to develop your capacity toapply forensic instruments, assessment and intervention. For psychologistsworking in custody, you will have opportunities to provide through-careinterventions to clients as they exit custody and into the community. Forpsychologists working in community centres, you will have opportunities toprovide through-care interventions for clients who may enter custody.Opportunities for travel to all areas within WA are available, with the chanceto learn about and engage first-hand with Indigenous cultures from around thestate. In all settings, you will work with many individual clients andget involved in interagency strategies to create change.
Working in Custody.
In custody, we are currently offering brand newservices and implementing an enhanced model of care. The model reflects bestpractice in Youth Justice and will focus on rehabilitation through atrauma-informed, therapeutic approach. Some initiatives, that operate alongsideof Youth Justice Psychological Services:
* The establishment of theNeurodevelopmental and Mental Health Service in custody. This team worksalongside Youth Justice Psychological Services and includesneuropsychologists, a psychiatrist, a speech pathologist, paediatricservices and increased access to clinical nurse specialists;
* The intensive mentoringprogram in the centre, which is available to assist the centre to meet theneeds of young people with complex needs;
* A diverse range oftherapeutic programs, including art therapy, trauma informed yoga, andtherapy animal programs;
* Creation of an AboriginalServices Unit, which includes additional Aboriginal Youth SupportOfficers, Aboriginal Support Officers, Aboriginal Mental Health workersand a Manager Aboriginal Services;
* Increasing access for youngpeople to cultural programs and activities;
* A new rewards and incentivesprogram, based on best practice;
* A partnership with TelethonKids Institute, which will look to enhance a research focus in YouthJustice, provide additional training for staff and review assessmentprocesses with young people.
* The development of a newCrises Care (Trauma Informed) Unit at Banksia Hill Detention Centre.

Many young people in Youth Justice are placed onCommunity-based orders and are case-managed by Youth Justice staff who work incommunity centres, alongside psychologists. Young people who are involved withYouth Justice often have complex needs. They may have experienced trauma, havepsycho-social challenges, neurodevelopmental difficulties and mental healthconcerns.
In Community Youth Justice centres, psychologistsare highly valued for their expertise and provide; assessment, evidence-basedinterventions and consultation, in order to reduce offending. Psychologistsalso prepare Pre-sentence assessments and Fitness to Stand Trial assessmentsfor the Children’s Courts across the state. Psychologists work in boththe metropolitan area and regionally. Opportunities for fly-in, fly-out workare also available for those interested.
To be eligible for appointment to permanentpositions in the West Australian Public Sector you must be an Australiancitizen or have permanent resident status in Australia.
WWC positions
In accordance with the National Child SafetyPrinciples, people who work directly with children and young people, you musthave a current Working with Children Check or be able to successfully apply forone to be eligible for appointment to this position.
Qualifications
* A tertiary qualification isrequired in line with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency(AHPRA).
* Holds ‘Full Registration’with AHPRA; AND
* Eligibility to commence theRegistrar program as a Clinical / Counselling / Forensic Psychologist
OR;
* A tertiary degreequalification in Psychology; AND
* Holds ‘General Registration’as a Psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner RegulationAgency (AHPRA)
Please note that for the positions at SpecifiedCalling Level 3, full registration with the AHPRA with endorsement as aClinical/ Counselling/ Forensice Psychologist is required.
