Located at the Services Building (G12) on Darlington Campus Support environmental compliance and the development and implementation of a University wide Environmental Management System (EMS) Base Salary HEO8 $121,508 - $137,032 p.a. 17% superannuation About the opportunity The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for a motivated and experienced Environmental Risk & Compliance Specialist t o join the dynamic Health, Safety & Wellbeing Specialists team at the University of Sydney. The Environmental Risk & Compliance Specialist will support the Manager, Environmental Risk in driving University-wide compliance with environmental regulations, playing a key role in the development and implementation of the Environmental Management System (EMS) to strengthen risk and compliance frameworks. It also contributes to the continuous improvement of environmental policies and leads broader initiatives to mitigate environmental risks beyond the EMS. The successful candidate will play a key role in strengthening organisational capacity and staff capability to support a decentralised approach to environmental management. The position also serves as a subject matter expert, delivering strategic advice, detailed reports, and technical solutions related to the Environmental Management System (EMS) to stakeholders across diverse university portfolios and services. This hybrid role includes flexible work-from-home arrangements, supporting a healthy work-life balance and overall well-being. Your key responsibilities will be to: provide expert advice and support for projects and operational teams to ensure environmental compliance with legislation and conformance with the Environmental Management System (EMS) contribute to the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the University’s EMS, including procedures, tools, and digital systems that enhance compliance and performance reporting. coordinate and participate in EMS-related activities such as working groups, audits, assurance programs, site inspections, and environmental investigations to drive risk mitigation and continuous improvement develop and deliver training, tools, and communication strategies to raise awareness and capability in environmental risk, compliance obligations, and EMS practices across the University collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support integration of environmental risk management with broader safety and operational risk frameworks undertake additional projects and duties that support environmental risk and compliance functions as directed by the Manager, Environmental Risk. As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for an Environmental Risk & Compliance Specialist who has: postgraduate qualifications in environment science or related field or and an equivalent combination of relevant training and experience demonstrated proficiency designing, developing, and embedding an EMS high-level knowledge of legislative, regulatory, and other compliance obligation requirements relating to Environmental Management excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong attention to detail and a proven ability to produce and deliver communications and training materials for diverse audiences excellent interpersonal skills, with demonstrated negotiation, relationship management and influencing skills significant experience working in environmental management and with maintaining and improving environmental management systems in a complex legislative and regulatory framework excellent computer skills and extensive experience with word processing, spreadsheets, website updating, databases etc, with the ability to learn quickly.
