We're looking for enthusiastic and motivated Front of House Assistants for this year's Edinburgh International Book Festival.
Ideally, you'll have previous experience in a customer-facing role, high standards of presentation and confident communication skills. You will also have the ability to work as part of a large team, problem solve under pressure and a strong attention to detail.
Temporary, full time role: 6 August - 24 August 2025
Rate of pay: £12.60 per hour + holiday pay
Front of House Assistants have specific responsibility for:
Managing queues and seating audiences efficiently to ensure events start on timeMonitoring venues and public areas (including toilet facilities) to ensure that they are kept clean, tidy, safe and fully stocked with relevant suppliesAnswering customer queries, providing up-to-date information and excellent customer care at all timesAssisting families with young children and patrons with disabilities around the siteAssisting in venue set up, including preparation of reserved seating for disabled customers and distribution of materials for children's workshops and interactive eventsOperating roving microphones for question and answer sessionsLiaising with teachers to check large school groups on and off siteMonitoring the audience and venues to prevent and detect emergency situationsEvacuating the public in the event of an incidentContributing to our environmental sustainability work by encouraging visitors to use the on-site recycling facilitiesSuccessful candidates will possess the following:

Previous customer-facing experience, preferably in a festival or arts environmentHigh standards of presentation, commitment and responsibilityExcellent customer service and confident communication skillsAttention to detail and ability to problem-solve under pressureThe ability to work as part of a teamAn enthusiastic personality and a flexible, positive attitudeThe post is based at our Festival site at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, Lauriston Place. In general, FOH staff are required to work 6 days out of 7 on a shift basis Monday – Sunday, 42 hours per week. Morning shifts can start from 8am and evening shifts can finish at 11:30pm. Rotas will be issued in advance of the Festival. Attendance at all training days is compulsory, and training will take place on Wednesday 6 August and Thursday 7 August.
