Social Media Video Editor (Short-Form) – Contract
Hybrid WFH
10–15 hours/week approx. (variable to start)
Rate: $40–$60/hr
Start Date: ASAP (project-dependent)
Upfilm is growing fast, and we're on a mission to become Australia's leading story-first social media production company. We create high-quality, story‑driven social media reels and photos for Melbourne businesses – taking the work seriously, but not ourselves
About the role
This is first and foremost a story + pacing role, not a VFX‑heavy one.
You will:
* Edit short‑form vertical videos (Reels/Shorts) from our shoots – cutting for story, pace and retention.
* Build episodes/series from recurring characters (owners, staff, patients/clients) so the audience has a reason to come back.
* Add captions, simple motion, graphics and music that feel native to the platform.
* Make footage shot on‑site by our team look polished, cohesive and on‑brand.
* Test different hooks and structures to maximise watch time and results.
* Prep exports in multiple versions/platform specs and keep everything organised for reuse.
* Collaborate with our founder and creative producers, respond to feedback and push for the strongest idea on screen, not just the fanciest transition.
This role is ideal for a mid‑level editor who loves social‑first storytelling and wants a reliable, flexible side gig with the potential to grow into a larger part‑time or full‑time role as we scale.
About you
You're not just an editor – you're a bit obsessed with how short‑form social video works .
You:
* Have strong examples of Reels/Shorts/TikTok you've edited (please don't apply without this).
* Think in hooks, beats and retention curves – you know the first 3 seconds matter more than any lens choice.
* Can watch raw footage from a clinic or studio and quickly find the human moments, jokes and reactions that bring it to life.
* Know that a simple, well‑timed cut often beats an over‑edited, effect‑heavy video.
* Are comfortable adding captions, basic motion graphics and sound design that feel natural on social.
* Understand metrics like views, watch time, shares and saves – and you're curious about what made a video "work".
* Take feedback well, iterate without ego, and care about making each round stronger.
* Communicate clearly and reply promptly – especially when we're working to tight client timelines.
* Most of all, you get a kick out of taking niche services businesses and turning them into stories and characters people actually want to follow – while still hitting real business goals (leads, hires, bookings, growth).
How to apply
Please apply with:
* Your CV or LinkedIn
* Links to your showreel and/or portfolio, including:
o At least 5 short‑form videos (Reels/Shorts/TikTok) you edited yourself
o 2–3 sentences on a recent Reel/Short you love (brand or creator) and why you think it worked
