About This Opportunity

This is an exciting, newly created role within The University of Queensland's Legal Services division. We are seeking an energetic, senior lawyer to lead a small team of commercial and property and projects lawyers. You will work collaboratively with other Directors and also support the General Counsel with overall team management and providing strategic legal advice on a wide range of issues affecting the University.

As part of a collegial senior leadership team, this position will play a key role in driving high performance and reinforcing our collaborative team culture. Beyond the team, this role will be expected to develop and maintain strong and effective working relationships with internal clients and other University stakeholders.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a high performing inhouse legal team, with exposure to a diverse range of work, including large scale, complex commercial and property transactions and governance related matters.

This role offers the rare advantage of working in a high-impact legal environment without the pressure of billable hours. Instead, your expertise will directly support the University's mission of advancing knowledge, fostering innovation, and delivering public good. By contributing to UQ's diverse and meaningful initiatives, this role offers the opportunity to be part of a team that adds real value.

About UQ

As part of the UQ community, you will have the opportunity to work alongside the brightest minds, who have joined us from all over the world.

Everyone here has a role to play. As a member of our professional staff cohort, you will be actively involved in working towards our vision of a better world. By supporting the academic endeavour across teaching, research, and the student life, you will have the opportunity to contribute to activities that have a lasting impact on our community.

With a shared goal to create lasting and positive change for communities across the world, at UQ you will be challenged, inspired and rewarded; challenged to do your best work, inspired by colleagues from across UQ's diverse community, and rewarded for your contributions, expertise and the unique experiences you bring. About You

The successful applicant must be admitted (or eligible to be admitted) as a Solicitor or Barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland, with demonstrated relevant expertise and experience in commercial and contract law. This includes advising on complex or major contracts and projects and a demonstrated ability to draft a wide variety of legal documents and to handle and resolve complex legal issues.

You will also have demonstrated management experience, including in effectively managing, motivating and developing a team to achieve operational objectives and balance competing priorities.

You will be a team player, with high level written and oral communication and demonstrated interpersonal and negotiation skills. Ideally, these attributes will be partnered by an understanding of the legislative framework that applies to UQ or experience in acting for a statutory body or government entity as well as the ability to act strategically, work independently and apply sound judgement skills when solving problems.

We are looking for a collaborative leader who will share management and operational responsibilities while maintaining a hands-on approach with their team. Enquiries
