Senior Technical Manager Job Description

This role is an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled and experienced Senior Technical Manager to join our team.

The successful candidate will oversee technical operations, support, and infrastructure projects within the school, developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure efficient laboratory and technical services. They will lead laboratory management, allocate resources, direct a team, provide technical expertise, ensure safety and regulatory compliance, optimise resource use, manage budgets, and oversee asset purchasing.


About the Role

* Develop and implement school-wide policies and procedures ensuring efficient operation of laboratories and technical services.
* Lead laboratory management, allocate resources, direct a team, and create a high-quality teaching and research environment.
* Provide technical expertise, ensure safety and regulatory compliance, optimise resource use, manage budgets, and oversee asset purchasing.
* Collaborate with Faculty and University leadership to shape long-term infrastructure planning and drive innovation in technical services.


Key Skills and Qualifications

* Tertiary qualifications in a science or engineering based discipline with extensive work experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience within a tertiary education or research environment.
* A sound understanding of chemical engineering industrial chemistry and/or food science principles and their practical implementation.
* Demonstrated ability in developing, implementing and managing systems, including purchasing, asset management, repairs and maintenance across a large work unit.
* Extensive knowledge and understanding of instrument analytical techniques.
* Extensive knowledge of hazardous materials and dangerous goods (HMDG) and their safe management.
* Strong analytical skills.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Proficient computing skills including word processing, spreadsheets and databases.
* Demonstrated ability to implement equal opportunity policies and programs.
* Extensive experience implementing safety systems.
* An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
* Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
