About Aurukun State School:
Aurukun State School, locally known as Koolkan Aurukun State School, serves students from Kindergarten to Year 12 and has approximately 220 students. Located in a geographically remote First Nations community on the Northwest coast of the Cape York Peninsula, Aurukun is situated 11 hours by road from Cairns and 2 hours by road from Weipa. The community is home to around 1,300 people and is the traditional homeland of the Wik, Wik Waya, and Kugu peoples. The predominant traditional language spoken is Wik Mungkan, which is the first language for most Aurukun children. Established in 1974, Koolkan Aurukun State School remains the only school in the community. The school's moral purpose is grounded in the belief that every child is unique, valued, and capable of learning; that every child should have equal access and participation locally, nationally, and internationally; and that education is a powerful tool for change, creating a lifetime of enriched possibilities.
