Job Title: Principal Legal Officer, Commercial Law Job Responsibilities: The Principal Legal Officer (PLO) in the Commercial Law section is a subject matter expert tasked with supervising and offering second counsel to lawyers within their team.

PLOs personally handle matters of a technical or sensitive nature, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and driving issues forward. They are adept at navigating complex issues through effective stakeholder engagement, clear communication, and deep subject matter knowledge. PLOs apply a pragmatic approach to problem‑solving and provide exceptional customer service to clients.

In addition to these responsibilities, PLOs lead a team by developing staff, setting goals, and driving performance through effective management strategies. They delegate work appropriately and measure performance to ensure high standards are maintained. In this role, collaboration with the three other PLOs in Commercial Law is essential for managing workflow, reporting, and contributing to team and branch meetings.

PLOs also work closely with Senior Executive Service (SES) members to ensure appropriate briefing and escalation and to support the team effectively.

Education and Experience Information: Essential qualifications for the role include a degree in law from an Australian university or a comparable overseas degree recognized in Australia for admission to practice.

Candidates must also possess a Practising Certificate or be eligible to attain one. Additionally, at least three years of post‑qualification experience is required.

Salary Information: The classification for this position is Principal Legal Officer with a salary range of $157, to $177,, plus % superannuation. The position is ongoing (permanent) and full‑time, with part‑time pro‑rata salary adjustments available.

The Commercial Law section is part of the Commercial, Employment, and Information Law Branch within the Legal Group. It is a diverse commercial practice covering areas such as property law, leasing, major procurements, intellectual property, probity, funding, and grant arrangements. The team operates collaboratively to provide pragmatic and concise advice to client areas, effectively managing legal risks on behalf of the department.

Ideal candidates should possess specialized knowledge and experience in commercial law advisory work, preferably with experience in government procurement and contracting, grants, and property. High‑quality management and leadership skills are essential for the effective management and development of senior legal officers and legal officers. Strong technical legal advice writing, second counselling, and research skills are also highly desirable.

Candidates should have sophisticated relationship management, communication, and negotiation skills to develop productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and provide excellent client service. The ability to work under pressure and be agile, flexible, and responsive to managing competing priorities and tight timeframes is critical.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the position, candidates must be Australian citizens. The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (AGSVA) security clearance. Additionally, ABF Workers must obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC), and Home Affairs Workers must obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check.

In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check, as determined by the delegate.
