Offer description

The role of a Children's Epilepsy Nurse Specialist is an exciting opportunity to join our paediatric epilepsy team on a short term basis to cover maternity leave.

Epilepsy is a complex condition affecting 1 in 100 people, with a large percentage having other identified neurodevelopmental difficulties/disabilities.

We welcome highly motivated applicants who really understand the short and long term effects for the child young person and their families.

Key Responsibilities

* Develop expertise in the speciality
* Teach and support staff in the clinical areas
* Undertake research and audit as required

You will have the opportunity to deputize for the lead nurse in her absence and act as a mentor to students undertaking their nurse training.

As a specialist nursing role, you will be responsible for delivering specialist care to children and young people with suspected or confirmed diagnoses of epilepsy and providing advice and support to their carers.

You will work autonomously to manage your own caseload of patients whilst working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

About the Role

The Children and Young People's Epilepsy Service is part of the Integrated Child Health Department within Northampton General Hospital.

The Director has a shared ethos of the importance of working together to ensure the best outcomes for the child/young person and their family.

The post holder will work across both acute and community settings, primary and secondary care, and in partnership with the child and young person who has epilepsy, their families and health and social care professionals.

Required Skills and Qualifications

* Effective verbal and written communication skills
* Ability to cope with highly emotive situations and reflect appropriately
* Skills to carry out the physical/clinical aspects of the role

Benefits

This role provides a great opportunity to work as an autonomous practitioner, providing teaching, advice and practical support to families and other carers in the community setting.

Opportunities are available to develop your skills in multi-agency working and participate in relevant local and national audits.

As a member of the paediatric multi-disciplinary team (MDT), you will promote the health and wellbeing of children and young people and be an expert resource for them and their parents/carers.

Others

The post can be physically demanding as we travel across South Northamptonshire and visit children in both town and rural locations in their own homes.

Although this post is predominantly a Monday to Friday service, the post holder will also be expected to participate in supporting the activation of out of hours and weekend cover to support end-of-life care.

Transport between various community services will be reimbursed.
