If you are interested in psychiatry, this is a great opportunity. This is a new role designed to support the on-call consultant psychiatrist and to provide an opportunity for medical students to engage in work in the health sector. The role involves 5 hours of work on a Saturday and Sunday, 0900-1300 hours, predominantly acting as a scribe for the psychiatrist undertaking patient reviews. Usually the reviews will be of new patients admitted to the Acute Adult Inpatient Unit, but patients could be reviewed in any of the 4 inpatient psychiatry units, the ED or in any other ward of the hospital. The student will be provided with a laptop and will need to contemporaneously record the proceedings of the consultant review, including documenting the mental status examination, risk assessment, provisional diagnosis and initial management plan. The psychiatrist will countersign each entry. Training and support will be offered in using the MH-DMR electronic documentation system. If time allows after all reviews are completed, additional duties can be undertaken in supporting the doctors in training on duty.
