Primary objective
The position will provide timely and high-quality legal services to internal and external stakeholders to support robust regulation
of relevant occupations and industries and the execute the function of the Unit Titles Schemes Supervisor.
Context statement
The position sits within the Occupational and Industry Licensing and MigrationNT branch in the Business and Regions Division,
which is responsible for delivering robust and contemporary occupational and industry regulation, advancing governance and
sustainability of incorporated associations, and growing our skilled workforce and population.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide legal advice and support to internal and external stakeholders including team members, departmental leadership, and
statutory boards in the execution of regulatory functions.
2. Provide advice to members of the public on complex and sensitive matters relating to unit titles and schemes, providing, or
arranging conciliation services, approving by-laws, and assisting with legislative and policy reform.
1. Support statutory boards in conducting inquiries and hearings including preparing relevant documentation, liaising with parties,
and appearing as counsel assisting the board.
4. Represent the department and statutory boards in relevant legal proceedings including instructing counsel and appearing at
tribunals and courts.
5. Maintain a high level of knowledge of relevant areas of the law and of relevant practices and procedures.
1. Provide training and advice to the division regarding statutory interpretation, administrative decision making and representation
where decisions are challenged.
7. Prepare high quality research, advice and briefings as required.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Admission as an Australian legal practitioner and eligibility to obtain a local practising certificate.
1. Demonstrated experience in interpreting and applying legislation and providing advice to a range of stakeholders.
2. Demonstrated high level experience in research, analysis, and conceptual thinking to identify, evaluate, and prioritise strategies
and policy in a changing environment.
4. Demonstrated high level of written and oral communication skills and the ability to meet the requirements of a wide range of
audiences to provide clear and considered advice.
5. Highly developed organisational, interpersonal and leadership skills, with demonstrated high level judgement in responding to
changing situations and circumstances, setting priorities, meeting deadlines, and producing work of a high standard – both
individually and as a team member/leader.
Desirable
1. Knowledge of the Territory, its laws, the workings of government and the development of legislation.
1. Experience in working in a regulatory environment.
