The Norwegian Red Cross (NoRC) is part of the Red Cross Red Crescent (RCRC) Movement, the world's largest humanitarian network with millions of volunteers operating in 190 countries. The RCRC Movement's mission is to alleviate human suffering, protect life and health, and uphold human dignity especially during armed conflicts and other emergencies.
Duties and Responsibilities
This advertisement concerns application for training leading to potential admission to our Emergency Response (ER) roster. It is not for a specific or permanent position within the Norwegian Red Cross.
The Norwegian Red Cross maintains a roster of trained specialists (delegates) ready to be deployed with standardized equipment on short notice in response to international emergencies such as natural disasters, conflicts, health emergencies, or climate-related emergencies. Delegates work closely with the local Red Cross-National Society to provide specific services where local infrastructure is damaged, temporarily out of service, out of reach, or insufficient to cope with the needs.
Most delegates have a full-time job with permission from their employer to take leave of absence without pay if requested by NoRC to go on a mission. The expected length of availability for a mission is a minimum of 6 weeks. Delegates are on contract with Norwegian Red Cross and receive a salary while on mission, in addition to other compensations if applicable.
Clinical Emergency Response Unit
NoRC has specialized ERUs offering immediate medical assistance, health services, public health, psychosocial support, and water and sanitation services.
NoRC deploys ERUs together with IFRC/ICRC in operations for four months or more to prevent, detect, and respond to health needs in emergencies and conflict areas. Deployable health capacities support inter-agency health coordination, strategic health direction, community and clinic-based health interventions, and provide critical lifesaving services to communities, supporting government health systems.
Qualifications
The Surgeon Delegate will be responsible for:
* Providing surgical care to patients in hospital settings, collaborating with nursing, medical, and support teams; flexible to provide care in mobile clinics, outpatient departments, isolation, or outbreak areas.
* Performing pre-operative assessments, emergency triage, and resuscitation when appropriate.
* Supporting the SMO and surgical team in establishing and managing surgery and anesthesia services, including:
* General emergency surgeries such as laparotomy
* Trauma care
* Orthopedic and soft tissue debridement surgeries
* Management of skin flaps and grafts post-debridement
* Emergency Caesarean sections
Multi-skilled delegates are essential for supporting roles in emergency health operations.
Additional Information
To join NoRC’s ERU roster, candidates must complete the recruitment process (application, interview, references), 24 hours of online training, and attend specific trainings:
* IMPACT: A one-week course preparing delegates for international fieldwork through theory and practical activities.
* Hospital Training: Simulates emergency response operations, including deployment of Emergency Hospitals and public health teams; lasts one week, evaluated on a pass/non-pass basis.
* Profile-specific trainings may be required for certain roles.
Once training is completed, candidates are included in the ER roster and may be contacted for deployment. Participation in trainings is unpaid.
All delegates must be available for at least one deployment per year. Applicants should plan accordingly and obtain necessary employer approvals.
In your application, include motivation, availability, relevant experience, and cross-cultural communication skills (max 700 words). Only applications in English will be considered. Suitable candidates will be contacted for interviews. Processing may take longer than expected.
