Aerospace Medicine Specialists/Flight Surgeons are primary care physicians for pilots and crew members traveling in air or space.
You will discover, prevent and manage the various physiological responses that result from encountering exceptional environments, enabling our Airmen to stay in peak condition and continue their jobs in the air.Primary ResponsibilitiesConduct medical examinations and provide care for air and missile crewsDetermine fitness for flying and special duties as well as evaluating living and working environments to detect and control health hazardsRegularly participate in flying missions to observe and advise on aeromedical issuesDevelop and manage preventive medicine programs, including the education of flight personnel in healthy lifestylesEstablish procedures for managing casualties in aviation accidents and other disastersProvide advice on aeromedical evacuation and serve on aviation mishap investigation boardsServe as the liaison between flying squadrons and medical servicesUp to 30 days of vacation with pay each yearExcellent healthcare coverage for you and your familyFood and housing allowanceA generous retirement program from day one of your serviceWorld class job/technical training that will make you competitive in any fieldFinancial benefits to help you pay for college/higher educationQualificationsM.D.
or D.O. degree and completed an ACGME- or AOA-accredited program of postgraduate specialty trainingIf a graduate of a foreign medical school, you must have attained permanent certification by the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and complete an approved internship, residency and/or fellowshipCompletion of a residency at a fully accredited residency program.
Approved residencies are Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine.
Internal Medicine candidates with subspecialty training will require CFM approvalMust be proficient in adult primary care medicineCompletion of a primary course in aerospace medicineMust hold a current, active, permanent and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state or territory of the United States or in the District of ColumbiaMust possess an aeronautical rating of Flight Surgeon, Senior Flight Surgeon or Chief Flight SurgeonMinimum 12 months of experience as a flight surgeon (Aerospace Medicine Specialist only)Board eligible in Aerospace Medicine (Aerospace Medicine Specialist only)Completion of Commissioned Officer training courseMust be a U.S. citizen between the ages of 18 and 47Must be willing to relocateAbout the Air National GuardThe Air National Guard is a unique military branch that offer you great careers while giving you the flexibility to work full time or part time.
