The Kalgoorlie Rare Earth Processing Facility (REPF) is a key strategic platform for critical mineral production, blending pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical process in an Australian first, mineral processing plant. The Opportunity:
Due to our exponential growth, an opportunity has arisen for a Senior Process Engineer, who will be instrumental in providing technical expertise and support in the development, design, commissioning, and optimization of the Kalgoorlie Rare Earth Processing Facility (REPF). This role ensures that process systems are safe, efficient, and compliant with Lynas' operational, quality, and environmental standards, and plays a key role in process design reviews, testing, and commissioning activities to achieve production performance targets and continuous improvement across the facility.
This Senior Process Engineer position will be offered as an 8/6 FIFO ex-Perth roster.
A relocation-package may also be on offer for those also willing to relocate to our Goldfields region for family-life balance.
Project Development & Process Engineering
* Support the Superintendent Process Control in the development and review of process design documentation, including PFDs, P&IDs, Functional Descriptions (FDs), Operating Manuals (OMs), HAZOPs, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
* Evaluate design changes, drawing releases, and process improvements to ensure alignment with performance, cost, and safety objectives.
* Collaborate with Operations, Maintenance, and Project teams to develop process design and packaging specifications.
* Create front-end engineering packages that control project costs, assess vendor bids, develop procurement recommendations, and oversee commissioning and start-up activities.
* Undertake additional process design and development tasks as workload and project progression allow.
Health, Safety & Environment
* Promote and uphold the Lynas Kalgoorlie HSE and Quality Assurance systems.
* Ensure that all process designs, activities, and work areas comply with Lynas' HSE policies, regulations, and housekeeping standards.
* Participate in risk assessments, incident investigations, and development of control measures to achieve Lynas' Zero Harm objectives.
Process Design & Development
* Develop and review key process documentation, including:
o Basis of Design (BOD)
o Process Mass Balances
o Equipment Sizing and Calculations
o Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
o Functional Descriptions (FDs) for process and equipment
* Ensure that process documentation meets design intent, operational functionality, and safety standards.
Testing, Data Analysis & Optimisation
* Collaborate with the Hydrometallurgy Technicians and laboratory staff on laboratory and pilot test work, including data interpretation and process analysis.
* Conduct plant performance assessments, process monitoring, and troubleshooting to identify improvement opportunities.
* Analyse operating data to support process optimisation and cost efficiency initiatives.
* Contribute to developing process performance reports and recommendations.
Commissioning & Start-Up
* Develop and review Operating Manuals (OMs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
* Participate in commissioning planning, interdepartmental collaboration, and execution of commissioning and start-up activities.
* Provide technical support during ramp-up to ensure safe and efficient transition from project to steady-state operations.
Other Responsibilities
* Perform other duties of a similar or related nature as required to support REPF operations and project delivery.
* Contribute to special projects and process improvement initiatives as assigned.
* Work place is Kalgoorlie. However, frequent travel to Lynas' operations in Mt Weld is required to support ongoing and future projects.
Required skills and experience:
* Tertiary qualification in either Chemical, Process Engineering, Metallurgy or Mineral Processing
* Recent experience in Pyrometallurgical operations, including waste gas treatment, where you can demonstrate process plant development, commissioning and operations optimisation knowledge. Candidates not possessing this qualification will not be considered
* Recent experience in an operational processing plant environment, where you can demonstrate process plant development, commissioning and optimisation knowledge Schedule 26 (of WHS Mines Regs) Statutory Supervisor Exam achievement, or exam in progress to be completed
* Unwavering approach to safety leadership and familiar with best practices, safety and environment management processes
* Ability to identify constraints and opportunities to meet operational objectives, and able to utilize technical skills to optimize processes
* Continual improvement mindset with a strong desire to take ownership in ensuring the plant operations achieve successful outcomes whilst being proactive, diplomatic, and demonstrating initiative
* Effective verbal and written communicator with strong relationship-building skills, with collaborative abilities to build relationships with key stake holders across the operation to ensure compliant optimum plant performance
* Strong organisational, time management and problem-solving skillsets
* Expansive soft skills across the Microsoft Suite of software, Power BI fluency highly advantageous
* Excellent problem-solving and analytical capability with high attention to detail
* Minimum WA unencumbered C class drivers' license, or above
