Nepean Adolescent Mental Health Unit (NAHMU)
A fresh, purpose built 10-bed facility dedicated to supporting adolescents aged 12 to 17 who are navigating complex and severe mental health challenges. This state-of-the-art inpatient unit is the newest chapter in the Child, Youth and Family Mental Health (CYFMH) story, expanding its reach to provide compassionate, specialised care from the earliest stages of life through to young adulthood. NAHMU isn't just a place of healing, it's a vital step forward in empowering young people and their families with the support they need, when they need it most.
Responsibilities
In this senior position, you will work alongside the Senior Social Worker and Senior Occupational Therapist as a primary therapist and care coordinator for young people admitted to the unit. You will act as a key clinician for both young people and their families, guiding the development and implementation of care plans and delivering specialised assessment, formulation and evidence-based interventions. Your advanced clinical skills will support diagnostic clarification, risk assessment and the delivery of individual, family and group therapies. Interventions will draw on CBT, DBT and other evidence-based approaches tailored to the unique needs of each adolescent, addressing challenges such as mood and anxiety disorders, psychosis, self-harm, emotion dysregulation, interpersonal difficulties and trauma-related presentations.
What You Will Bring To The Role
Accredited post-graduate Masters or Doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology and full registration as Psychologist with AHPRA
Demonstrated substantial experience in Clinical Psychology including experience in Child and Adolescent Mental Health settings with adolescents ****** years) or equivalent. Preferably with experience working in an inpatient setting. Evidence of managing a caseload of moderate to high complexity, including acute, resistant, or comorbid psychological conditions.
Clinical Assessment, Diagnostic, Formulation, and Intervention Skills: Advanced proficiency in psychological assessment, diagnosis, use of psychometric tools, risk assessment, and case formulation for adolescents. Competence in delivering evidence-based therapeutic interventions (e.g. CBT, DBT, family therapy, trauma-informed therapies) suitable to adolescent inpatients. Ability to adapt modalities to developmental stages, intellectual capacity, cultural background, and clinical presentation.
Experience in consultation, supervision & mentoring: Ability to provide secondary consultation to multidisciplinary team members. Participate/lead peer supervision and collegial case review.
Independence, Judgment & Decision-Making: Ability to work independently, exercise clinical judgment in selecting/tailoring interventions. Sound ethical decision-making, ability to manage complex clinical situations (e.g. risk, self-harm, aggression, medications interactions) in inpatient context.
Inter-professional & Stakeholder Collaboration: Demonstrated skills in working as part of a multidisciplinary team (psychiatrists, nursing, allied health, peer workers etc.). Ability to liaise with families/carers, external agencies (e.g. schools, community mental health), legal or child protection services as needed. Cultural competence and sensitivity, especially regarding Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander young people and culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Research, Evaluation, Policy & Quality Improvement: Participation in or leadership of service development, evaluation, or research projects relevant to adolescent inpatient mental health. Skills in audit, quality improvement, outcome measurement. Willingness to contribute to development of clinical protocols, policy, guidelines, and in-service education and training.
Demonstrated ability to work flexibly including willingness to work after-hours and weekends as required, and to attend other CYF-MH sites. Current Driver's Licence and willingness to use for work-related travel.
