The opportunity we have available

The Vehicle Safety Operations Branch is Australia's national vehicle standards regulator, working to enhance vehicle safety, emissions control and anti-theft protection to ensure the Australian vehicle fleet is safe and efficient. The Application Assessment and Approval section is responsible for regulating the Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018 (RVSA) by assessing applications to ensure the criteria for approval are met.


What will you do?


We are seeking an APS 6 General Assessment Team Leader to join our team, providing a critical leadership role in supporting businesses and individuals to provide road vehicles to the Australian market. This position offers an exciting opportunity to lead a team of seven general assessors, ensuring the timely and accurate assessment of applications in accordance with the legislative framework.

The tasks of the APS 6 Team Leader in their day-to-day work can include:

1. Managing a team of seven general assessors, providing guidance, support and oversight to achieve team goals.
2. Overseeing application assessment and supporting team members to ensure compliance with the Road Vehicle Standards legislation.
3. Managing RAV corrections and VIN rejections, ensuring data integrity and accuracy.
4. Maintaining oversight of quality management systems and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
5. Managing the ROVER General Assessors mailbox, including responding to complex written enquiries and phone calls.

The team leader plays a vital role in ensuring the team is appropriately resourced and supported to deliver high-quality outcomes in a fast-paced regulatory environment.

Eligibility requirements

Employment with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts is subject to conditions prescribed within the Public Service Act 1999 including:

23. 24. Citizenship: candidates must be an Australian citizen at the time of submitting your application.
25. Health Assessment: The preferred candidate may be required to undergo a medical examination conducted by the department's preferred medical provider.
26. Security Clearance: The successful candidate must be able to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance at Baseline level. You must be willing to disclose all relevant and required information. You must have lived in Australia, or have a checkable background, for at least the preceding five years for Baseline Vetting clearances. More information on the security clearance vetting process is available on the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) website.
27. Police check: The successful candidate must satisfactory complete an Australian Federal Police criminal history check.
28. Integrity and Performance check: The successful candidate must satisfy the requirements in an Integrity and Performance check which is completed by your most recent employer.


Timeline and assessment


A selection panel will be established to assess your suitability against the advertised role.

If a merit pool is established it will be valid for 18 months from date it first appeared in the APS Gazette.
