The Maritime Directorate

The Maritime Directorate of the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) is responsible for managing the vast Western Australian coastline and facilitating the safe and sustainable use of navigable waters. Our responsibilities include management of Shipping and Pilotage Ports, oceanographic data collection, coastal management, strategic planning, and the design and delivery of boating infrastructure. We also manage maritime facilities, maritime environmental emergencies, and operational initiatives, ensuring the enhancement of the WA coast and safe use of navigable waters.


Mission

Maritime’s purpose is to provide and enable safe, accessible and sustainable use of navigable waters and to collaboratively plan, drive and deliver best practice in maritime development and management for the economic and social prosperity of Western Australia.


Collaborative Model

Maritime uses a collaborative management model working across the Transport Portfolio, other State Government Agencies and Local Government, along with Port Authorities, Maritime related businesses in the delivery of services to the community.

The Opportunity

These positions offer the opportunity to work on complex, high‑impact projects, apply specialist engineering expertise, and contribute to the stewardship of one of Western Australia’s most valuable natural assets.

You’ll lead or contribute to the investigation, design and delivery of coastal engineering solutions—addressing coastal vulnerability, climate change impacts and the safe, sustainable use of navigable waters. Working across planning, design and construction phases, you’ll collaborate with government, industry and community stakeholders to deliver high‑quality coastal infrastructure and long‑term adaptation outcomes for WA.

There is currently 1 permanent Principal Coastal Engineer (SCL4) position available for immediate filling and future vacancies are anticipated for Project Manager Coastal Engineering (SCL3) positions in the future.

Suitable applicants will be placed in a pool from which appointments will be made for these or similar future vacancies (fixed term or permanent) that arise within the next 24 months from date of first appointment across the Department.


About you

The leadership context for both positions is Personal Leadership.


Project Managers will

* Manage coastal engineering projects from investigation through to delivery.
* Apply specialist knowledge of coastal processes, climate impacts and infrastructure design.
* Engage stakeholders and manage consultants to deliver sustainable coastal outcomes.


Principal Coastal Engineers will

* Lead complex coastal engineering investigations, design and technical assurance.
* Develop sustainable solutions for coastal protection and maritime infrastructure.
* Provide expert advice, mentor engineers and influence strategic coastal decisions.
