This is a permanent part time (0.4FTE) position commencing Term 4, 2025

School Of Special Educational Needs: Sensory (SSEN:S) provides educational support for children with hearing loss, vision impairment or dual sensory loss from birth to completion of school. SSEN: S is based at the Statewide Services Centre in Padbury and supports children in both public and non-government schools throughout Western Australia.

SSEN: S operates the Deaf Education and Vision Education programs to support eligible children, their schools and families. Within these programs, SSEN: S supports young children from birth to completion of school with the SSEN: S Early Childhood Service (0-4 years) or in their local schools with the Visiting Teacher Service. SSEN:S employs teachers with specialist skills and other specialist staff such as educational audiologists, school psychologists, braille transcribers, Deaf education officers and educational interpreters.

The Early Childhood Service delivers group and individual targeted learning programs based on the St Gabriel’s Curriculum, including areas such as Language and Communication, Cognition, Audiology and Speech. Specialist teachers deliver targeted learning programs onsite and in schools, that may also be based on the Expanded Core Curriculum including areas such as Audiology, Language and Communication, Functional Skills for Curriculum Access and Social and Emotional Skills. Additionally, Visiting Teachers provide consulting support to schools and agencies in the provision of appropriate teaching and learning adjustments.

The Role

As a Special Needs Education Assistant in our specialised education programs, your key responsibilities will include:

- assisting and working with teachers in these programs and in promoting a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
- supporting students to reach optimal outcomes and access their educational program through the development of their communication, social, emotional, and physical skills.
- providing informed feedback on student progress and contributing to the evaluation of programs and achievement of goals.

Suitable applicants will ideally have a high level of interpersonal skills and work collaboratively with staff members to meet the needs of students. Applicants will ideally possess the knowledge and experience of working with students with a range of disabilities and learning difficulties and the ability to support student growth, both academically and socially, within the classroom setting.

Eligibility

- Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills, including report writing and the ability to effectively interact with students with special needs, and liaise with parents, teachers and community members and assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills with the ability to contribute to a professional team and provide advice and evaluation in the development of the education program, including individual programs where they have been implemented.
- Demonstrated effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or psychologists.
