The Royal Hobart Hospital and Department of Health is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Staff Specialist – Microbiology and Infectious Diseases vacancy.
The position will have a dual microbiology laboratory and clinical infectious diseases focus. Dual trained applicants or registrars completing their fellowship are encouraged to apply.

The Role
- Provide specialist Microbiology and Infectious Diseases services to the Royal Hobart Hospital.
- Provide clinical microbiology services for hospital inpatients and outpatients, sexual health services, GPs and public health.
- Assist in the diagnosis, treatment and care of public hospital inpatients and outpatients under the care of the Department of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.
- Assist in providing consultative service in infectious diseases medicine to other specialist units, medical colleagues and allied health care workers.
- Assist in the provision of specialist medical support and advice to Infection Prevention and Control services within the THS as required.
- Contribute to and further develop the department’s current activities, for example in the areas of immunocompromised host service, antibiotic stewardship, sepsis management and outpatient antibiotic therapy.
- Supervise and teach junior medical staff and medical students attached to the clinical unit.
- Participate in the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes of the hospital.
- Ensure that clinical records maintained on patients of the unit are timely, accurate and comprehensive.
- Ensure valuable communication regarding patient care with referring units and community practitioners.
- Participate in such quality improvement activities and hospital committees and administrative matters as required by the Director of Pathology Services, or Director - Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.
- Participate in the microbiology after‑hours roster.

Salary
Medical Practitioners (Public Sector) Award. A remuneration package comprising the Agreement base salary, relevant allowances and other entitlements will be negotiated with the successful applicant dependent on clinical experience and seniority.
Base salary points range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 at $216,300 through to Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 11 at $296,640 with further salary increments available.
- Access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $300,216 - $310,389 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award.
In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:
- Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle (subject to working full‑time hours) OR allowance in lieu of motor vehicle currently set at $28,786 pro rata per annum, paid fortnightly (with CPI indexation on 1 July each year).
- Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,974 pro rata per annum.
- Relocation allowance.
- On‑call allowance % of Base Salary.
- All other allowances as per current Award.
- And subject to approval from the Private Patient Scheme Committee (PPS), 35% of Base salary plus on‑call, pro rata of additional payment will be paid. If not admitted to the PPS, a 35% in lieu of PPS of base salary will be paid.

Details of Appointment
Permanent full‑time day work (with on‑call), working 76 hours per fortnight commencing from 2 February 2026. Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full‑time, part‑time and casual vacancies.

- Holds specialist registration; or
- Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who is on the specialist pathway: or
- Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who has a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.
- Pre‑employment checks: conviction checks in the following areas: crimes of violence, sex‑related offences, reliable drug offences, crimes involving dishonesty, identification check, disciplinary action in previous employment check.
