Position: Underwriter, Political Risk, Credit & Bond
Location: Sydney, NSW
This is a regulated role under the Central Bank of Ireland’s Fitness and Probity regime.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Deliver a profitable underwriting service to clients within the agreed business plan and individual authority.
2. Support business planning and forecasting processes.
3. Monitor financial exposure and premium income within set limits.
4. Maintain awareness of all claims advised and support claim settlement processes.
5. Ensure adequate reinsurance coverage for specific risks.
6. Build and maintain relationships with brokers and clients.
7. Assist in designing and structuring risks.
8. Review complex submissions, including applications, policy wording, inspection reports, loss runs, and financial reports, conducting research to assess risk levels.
9. Determine and negotiate appropriate risk premiums considering risk costs, reinsurance cessions, and administrative costs to ensure profitability.
10. Make informed underwriting decisions based on risk analysis and due diligence, negotiating policy terms within the target risk appetite.
11. Develop and manage relationships with customers and brokers across Australia and Asia, providing high customer service levels and exploring new business opportunities.
12. Advise and service clients on insurance and risk management to ensure satisfaction and meet their insurance needs.
13. Engage in cross-selling opportunities and account retention strategies.
14. Collaborate with team members, including underwriters, assistants, and management.
Reporting Line:
This role reports to the Senior Underwriter - Political Risk, Credit & Bond.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s Degree preferred; relevant experience in the class of business, with knowledge of trade finance and structured banking products, is advantageous.
2. Ability to analyze financial statements such as balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and cash flow statements.
3. Good judgment to solve straightforward problems.
4. Effective planning for sales and business development.
5. Strong negotiation skills with brokers and clients.
6. Ability to analyze complex problems and make key business decisions.
7. Excellent interpersonal skills to build relationships with brokers, clients, and colleagues.
8. Understanding of the insurance industry and relevant product portfolios.
