About the role
Mater is seeking applications for Interpreter - Persian/Farsi & Dari to join us in a part time role (0.2 FTE) based at our South Brisbane campus within the Language Services team starting mid-August / early-September ****.
While based in South Brisbane, this role will support the brand new Mater Hospital Springfield which opened in early ****. This state of the art facility meets the needs of the growing Greater Springfield region, providing public and private beds across ICU, maternity, emergency and medical, surgical services, and is set to care for over 200,000 patients annually.
In this role, you will deliver professional interpreting services across on‐site, telephone and telehealth settings, supporting communication in Persian/Farsi & Dari.
You will hold current accreditation with the NAATI and play a key role in facilitating clear, accurate communication between patients, their families and Mater staff.
As part of the Language Services team, you will act as a cultural liaison, helping to ensure patients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds can access safe, high‐quality and compassionate healthcare.
This role requires a high level of cultural awareness, sensitivity and a strong understanding of the challenges faced by diverse communities when navigating healthcare services.
Responsibilities
* Coordinate and provide in office, telephone and telehealth medical interpreting services across Mater sites as required in Persian/Farsi & Dari whilst complying with the AUSIT Code of Ethics
* Provide intercultural mediation for staff and the Persian/Farsi & Dari community
* Participate in Mater presentations relating to Language Services as part of a pre‐approved training program coordinated by the Language Services manager
* Participate in quality improvement activities as required
* Maintain data and participate in research as required by the Language Services manager
About you
* The ideal candidate will hold NAATI Certified Interpreter in Persian/Farsi & Dari.
* Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology and 5 years' experience working within a multidisciplinary healthcare setting
* Demonstrated information technology skills and competence, especially with interpreting booking systems
* A tertiary qualification in interpreting and translating is considered desirable
* High level interpersonal and communication skills as well as conflict resolution skills
* Demonstrated ability to use initiative and to work in a team environment
* Excellent time management skills and ability to perform well under pressure
* Sound knowledge of Microsoft applications and an ability to adopt Mater Hospital's in‐house interpreting booking application
Selection Criteria
* Fluency and literacy in English and Persian/Farsi & Dari and NAATI Interpreter Certification or Accreditation
* Demonstrated capacity to interpret in all medical settings including sound knowledge of medical terminology
* Ability to identify and convey the social and cultural factors affecting health care to ensure high quality care provided to patients
* Ability to identify ethical dilemmas and deal with them in compliance with the AUSIT Code of Ethics
