Biosecurity Animal Division are trusted leaders in science-based regulation and policy, proactively engaging with risk and delivering on shared biosecurity responsibilities. We aim to implement effective regulation and policy to enable safe trade in animals, animal products and biological goods, and minimize marine pest risk. Our multidisciplinary workforce collaborates with state and territory governments, Animal Health Australia, and industry to achieve optimal biosecurity outcomes. The Animal Strategy and Coordination Branch manages disease preparedness, market access, legislative updates, assurance activities, and data-driven cargo reform for biosecurity. Our work focuses on reducing animal disease risks to Australia’s health and environment. We collaborate with other divisions, government, industry, and stakeholders, promoting open communication and evidence-based decision-making.
We are looking for an experienced leader with extensive data analysis capabilities, who can work effectively in a dynamic and high performing team to manage national priorities including specific, focused projects.

As the Assistant Director Data Analyst, you will:
As a leader, you will contribute to planning, development and continuous improvement of data analyses, initiatives and capability. You will play a key role in informing policy and decisions impacting Australia's biosecurity system.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Leading technical analysis and modelling of import data to support business improvement activities.
- Leading activities to assess, include and monitor animal commodities on the Compliance Based Intervention Scheme.
- Preparing performance reports and other data summaries without supervision.
- Interpreting trends and patterns in complex datasets and making recommendations, ensuring that the dataset is suitable for the intended purpose.
- Providing data analyses, insights and expert advice that informs, influences and enhances policy development and decision making.
- Leading development, review and implementation of data management, governance, and analysis policies and procedures, including reviewing and updating technical work instructions for operational staff within the department.
- Engaging professionally with a range of internal and external stakeholders and providing sound technical advice on biosecurity clearance issues.
- Working collaboratively with operational teams to identify analytical requirements which support risk monitoring and commodity assurance activities.
- Contributing to team development, and supervising staff as required.
Eligibility
Our ideal candidate will have:
- The ability to work autonomously and lead a team of analytical staff and to work collaboratively on analytical projects.
- Demonstrated experience in sourcing and analysing data using programming languages (e.g. R, SQL), and presenting data of high quality to internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience working with complex and incomplete datasets, to assess data characteristics, trends, and the suitability of the information for the task and provision of associated advice to inform policy and decisions; and an ability to routinely evaluate the accuracy of script outputs.
- Demonstrated experience using DevOps and Git for managing analysis packages.
- Knowledge of Australia's import biosecurity systems and framework, and an understanding of import risk assessment and policy development, or an ability to quickly acquire this knowledge.
- Experience in promoting, developing and supporting data governance initiatives and new policies.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to engage effectively and discuss technical concepts with a variety of audiences.
- Experience managing competing priorities, exercising judgement and decision-making.
- Experience using Power BI for data visualisation work is highly desirable.
