EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

Assistant Manager, Strategic Policy and Tech Futures - EL1

What you will do:

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Strategic Policy and Tech Futures Team, which plays a pivotal and central role in ensuring eSafety is a leading voice, thought leader and trusted authority on policy and technology trends, challenges, opportunities, risks, sensitivities and synergies.

As Assistant Manager - Strategic Policy and Tech Futures, you will form part of the leadership of the team and will work with the other assistant managers and manager to drive a collaborative, constructive and high performing team that delivers for eSafety.

The key duties of the position include:

* lead, monitor, and coordinate eSafety's contributions to, and analysis of, inquiries, submissions and parliamentary processes, including parliament sittings and Senate Estimates
* assist in the analysis of proposed and new policy and law reform, including the analysis of draft legislation, draft policy proposals and proposed government initiatives
* contribute to and lead on coordination activities as part of eSafety's contribution to the Digital Platforms Regulator Forum, both internally and externally, especially as it relates to engaging with regulatory counterparts and external stakeholders on digital technology issues
* contribute a strategic and policy perspective to briefings, speeches and other communications providing advice to the eSafety Commissioner, Executive Manager (Strategy, Engagement, and Research) and the Manager (Strategic Policy and Tech Futures)
* conduct research and environmental scanning and produce high quality, robust and evidence-based advice on policy issues relating to eSafety's remit
* help set and deliver the strategic and policy priorities for eSafety and work collaboratively with other teams and subject matter experts across the organisation
* build strong networks with relevant stakeholders and represent eSafety in various meetings, events or forums
* work collaboratively with the other assistant managers in the team to support management of the team and priorities
* manage a range of competing priorities and drive long term projects.

The skills & capabilities you need to perform the role:

We are seeking experienced, talented and enthusiastic professionals to support regulatory policy, strategic direction and influence across government.

For our ideal candidate, the following skills would be highly desirable:

* strong policy skills, ideally with expertise in online safety, technology or related area
* strong skills in law reform or regulatory matters, ideally with expertise in online safety, technology or related area
* critical and analytical thinking, with excellent verbal and written communication skills
* the ability to respond positively in uncertain and high-pressure environments
* the ability to be flexible, agile and resilient in achieving objectives when confronted by competing demands and when faced with change
* demonstrated capacity to be self-driven and a supportive team-player.

The following skills would also be desirable:

* experience presenting complex information in a simple manner and briefing up to their manager
* experience in assisting the management of teams and creating a cohesive team culture
* interest in shaping responses to sensitive and complex issues and keeping abreast of initiatives and research relating to online harms and the governance and regulation of digital environments
* strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders across a range of sectors, including government, and experience explaining complex matters to a range of audience
* experience representing online safety policy or regulatory matters in cross-government or public forums.

The Strategic Policy and Tech Futures Team is responsible for promoting online safety by working to anticipate and address challenges to the regulation of online harms.

Additional information

This opportunity is open to existing APS employees only and will be offered to a successful candidate for a temporary period until December 2026.
