Hazardous Materials & Occupational Hygiene Consultant – Senior to Senior Associate‑level
Work with WSP's national Hazardous Materials & Occupational Hygiene team from the Central Coast, Newcastle, or our newly refurbished Sydney office.
In this role you will help elevate EHS standards, protect worker wellbeing, and strengthen client reputations by delivering expert advice that meets regulatory and best‑practice benchmarks.
The opportunity
We have in‑house NATA accredited asbestos laboratories in all major offices and are expanding our NSW team, looking for experienced consultants to take the lead on major client accounts. Our recent projects span industrial sites, research facilities, and public infrastructure for clients such as the Department of Education, Sydney Trains, Transport for NSW, Scentre Group, Westpac, NSW Health, AMPOL, SafeWork, CSIRO, and Rio Tinto.
What You'll Do
* Lead and manage hazardous materials assessments, including asbestos, lead, PCBs, and other regulated substances, from initial survey through to remediation and clearance.
* Provide occupational hygiene advice, including exposure assessment, risk management, and development of control strategies for chemical, biological, and physical hazards.
* Oversee the development and implementation of hazardous materials management plans and occupational hygiene monitoring programmes.
* Ensure compliance with relevant Australian legislation, codes of practice, and industry standards.
* Prepare high‑quality technical reports, risk assessments, and client communications in a timely manner.
* Mentor and provide technical guidance to consultants and junior staff, supporting their professional development and knowledge sharing.
* Build and maintain strong client relationships, identify new business opportunities, and contribute to tender submissions.
* Stay current with industry developments, emerging hazards, and technology trends relevant to hazardous materials and occupational hygiene.
About You
You are likely to have tertiary qualifications in a scientific field, environmental management/science, health and safety, or occupational hygiene.
Ideal Experience & Qualifications
* Typically 8+ years in hazardous materials management and occupational hygiene consulting.
* Demonstrated expertise in conducting hazardous materials surveys, risk assessments, and remediation projects.
* Comprehensive knowledge of relevant Australian and state regulations, codes of practice, and standards.
* Proven ability to manage complex projects, deliver high‑quality reports, and meet client expectations.
* Strong leadership, mentoring, and communication skills.
* Professional membership or certification (e.g. full membership of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH) or COH, and/or Licensed Asbestos Assessor).
* Valid Australian driver's licence and willingness to travel to client sites.
Location & Workstyle
Roles can be based at Central Coast, Newcastle, or our refurbished Sydney office. We work hybrid, offering flexible working from home when not required on client sites. Relocation support is available.
