Primary objective
Provide effective weed management services through the development, coordination, administration and implementation of weed
management activities including strategic control, eradication, survey, compliance and extension programs for stakeholders in the
Darwin Region (the area north of Port Keats through Pine Creek to East Arnhem Land). Please note that while some parts of the
position require spraying of weeds, it is essentially not a 'weed spraying' position.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Assist in the development and implementation of weed management activities through the provision of technical advice and
assistance to stakeholders and as part of the Darwin Weed Management team.
2. Participate in the implementation of strategic weed management initiatives, such as the Gamba Action Program, and evaluate
and report outcomes.
3. Locate and record weed infestations in the Darwin Region and update the weeds database accordingly. This includes conducting
ground and aerial weed surveys across remote parts of the NT such as Arnhem Land and large pastoral properties.
4. Coordinate and conduct strategic control of key weed infestations and undertake related duties.
5. Provide advice, and assist landholders in implementing on-ground weed control programs, prepare weed management plans
and undertake enforcement activities to ensure landholder obligations are met under the NT Weeds Management Act 2001 (the
Act).
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A relevant qualification awarded by an Australian institution, or equivalent, or relevant experience in a field of technical work
closely related to integrated weed management and/or natural resource management.
2. Ability to partake, plan and implement field trips in remote parts of the Darwin region, and demonstrated ability to manage
programs and specific projects effectively in remote localities for extended periods.
3. Demonstrated written and oral communication skills necessary for effective delivery of extension and compliance services and
report writing.
4. Experience in the delivery of weed management advice, and in the development of weed management plans or natural resource
management plans.
5. Ability and willingness to exercise powers under the Act or similar legislation and undertake other enforcement activities as
directed.
6. Experience in integrated weed management and the safe use, handling and application of a broad range of herbicides and
knowledge of NT flora.
1. Ability to work autonomously with direction, as well as in small teams to achieve overall work unit outcomes.
2. Current NT Class C Driver Licence or equivalent and ability to drive a manual vehicle.
Desirable
1. Experience in the field application of GIS (geographic information system) and GPS (global positioning system) for weed
mapping, planning and navigation.
2. Certificate IV in Government Investigations.
