Job Description


Your opportunity

We're looking for a highly motivated and self-driven Apprentice Marine-Mechanic who will have the opportunity to learn the vessel mechanical trade from experienced professionals. You'll gain hands‑on experience in all aspects of marine mechanics, from basic maintenance to advanced repairs, while working towards your certification.

This is a 4‑year fixed term full‑time contract role based in Barangaroo reporting into Lead Technical Officer.

Port Authority's fleet of 31 specialised vessels plays a vital role in supporting safe and efficient operations across NSW ports. Purpose‑built for a wide range of functions, these vessels enable our marine operations teams to deliver critical services and respond to incidents on the water. The fleet includes high‑powered pilot vessels used to safely transfer marine pilots to and from ships at sea; multipurpose vessels equipped with firefighting systems to tackle shoreline and marine fires; oil spill response vessels designed to deploy containment booms; hydrographic survey vessels for scanning the seabed and identifying underwater hazards; and workboats that support the inspection and maintenance of marine infrastructure.


What You Will Do

* To effectively complete a Certificate III in Marine Mechanical Technology (AUR30520) during an apprenticeship of up to four years.
* Assist in the repair and service of marine engines and engine components, electrical and electronic systems (including ignition systems and instrumentation), transmissions, propeller drives, and jet drive propulsion systems.
* Learn to diagnose and trouble‑shoot (primarily) outboard marine engines.
* Assist with periodic scheduling and record keeping of servicing.
* Perform daily workshop housekeeping, ensuring all tools and equipment are maintained in a clean and safe condition.
* Assist with workshop inventory on a regular basis, including email and phone communication to internal staff and external suppliers.
* Ensure risk assessments are completed for all activities and compliance with WHS policy, procedures, legislation and SWMS.
* Assist with the Office, Workshop and Yard duties.
* Undertake ad‑hoc activities as required to contribute to the achievement of the Marine Asset team.
* Complete Training and Assessment milestones and requirements of the qualification to a competent standard in accordance with the Training Plan.
* Maintain a clean and organised workspace.


Desired Skills and Experience

* Completion of Year 10 or above.
* Enrolment or eligibility to enrol in Certificate III in Marine Mechanical Technology (AUR30520).
* Strong interest and/or experience with boats.
* Willing to complete a Blue Card and first aid training course.
* Willingness to learn and take direction.
* Good communication skills, including the ability to clearly convey information and instructions, actively listen, and interact professionally with colleagues, supervisors, and external stakeholders.
* Intermediate computer literacy and technical orientation.
* Must have a valid driver's licence or be willing to obtain one and be available 5 days a week.
